Colombo area

Where is a good place (neighbourhood) to base yourself in Colombo? Not much into resorts, but I would like to be close to cultural sites in the city and some lively nightlife.

Hi Ramong, Costwise Wellawatte or Bambalapitiya, e.g. Sapphire hotel. Close to night clubs/casinos, though many night clubs are part of the Fort hotel scene. However that scene is hugely overpriced due to govt regulations. Mount Lavinia is even better costwise and a resort-area-in-the-city, but a bit further from the nightlife. All the best, & [Sandya']

Many thanks for your reply. It appears that the nightlife scene in Colombo is more on the 5 star hotel scene. Is there a train service that will take me to these area? Everything seems to be spread out in Colombo. Also, is there a train or shuttle bus service from the airport to the city?

Hi again, a) There is an airport bus service, #187 from Katunayake bus stand to Fort railway station. First take free shuttle bus from Arrivals to bus stand. b) No airport train, currently c) From Fort there are local trains to e.g. Bambalapitiya, Wellawatte and Mount yes - same train serving all 3 stations. The railway is about 100-200 m from the hotel zone on Galle Road, hence still a bus might be more handy. All the best, & [Sandya]
