I haven't been to Coimbra - but I don't see the logic of not visiting because it is 'just a university town'. It's in Portugal, so will be different from Oxford and and Cambridge. On the other hand, you don't 'need' to go anywhere you don't want to. Have a look at the travel guide to decide if Coimbra appeals to you.

Would you also skip Bologna and Paris because they are the sites of medieval universities?

    i would highly recomment coimbra.
in my opinion no town in portugal has a better vibe and it´s a real pretty town too with a nice setting by the river.
and the university is open for visits even if there are school terms.
it´s a big tourist attraction and they have made it possible for tourists to visit there even during school hours and it´s well worth it.
and it´s just a really nice town to be in.

I agree. Coimbra is a very pleasant city to visit. I shall do so again some time, as on my previous and so far only visit it rained heavily the whole time!

For transport buffs, Coimbra has the last surviving electric trolleybuses in Portugal.

You don't HAVE to go anywhere! I don't get your question. Every person chooses where to go according to what they like. For example I hate beach holidays so I never go to beaches except winter places when beach is deserted. I am allergic to sunbathing etc. I prefer mountains, rivers, historical places etc. You can go where you like...

maybe I should rephrase what I meant I apologize if it meant something irratable to others.
I meant to say my goal is not to go back to portugal again or anywhere that I have been, so I do not want to miss the things that I will regret, but at the same time, I do not want to see similar things. so if someone have been to both coimbra and UK's oxford, and they say to me, they are all very unique, and I would recommnand you to go then I will take that into consideration.

one of the reason I like to ask here b/c I know a lot of ppl have been to a lot more places than I and I respect their opinion :)
