Hi fellas: hope you as always will be helpful. I could not get it anywhere - books, net, etc, I only bother you guys as the last resort. Here is my dilemma: I will only have a day and half in Coimbra (max - two days) and I am very interested in visiting three not very distant places. How do I get from Coimbra to Alcobaca, Batalha, and (hopefully!) Tomar and come back to Coimbra having very limited time? Please help with detailed information, i.e. - with what of those towns is b etter to start and with what to finish? what are the easiest connections/transfers between locations? Bus schedule will be the best response. Please help! I am on a very tight schedule ;-( Thanks!
I can help a little. These places are some distance from Coimbra and you spend a lot of time travelling. Coimbra to Tomar is feasible by train but the journey takes about 2 hours. Train times at www.cp.pt I do not know of a bus route between Coimbra and Tomar. Coimbra to Alcobaca is just possible by train also. The journey takes over 2 hours but the railway station of Valado/Alcobaca/Nazare/ is 6km from the town. The Rede - Expressos bus leaves Coimbra daily for Alcobaca at 0930, arriving at 1100. The only bus back to Coimbra leaves Alcobaca at 1625. The journey is 90 minutes, costs 22 Euros round-trip. www,rede-exprerssos.pt Rede-Expressos also has a bus from Coimbra to Batalha at 0930, returning at 1630 and you must change buses in Leiria. There is local bus service between Alcobaca and Batalha with RODOTEJO (www.rodotejo.pt) but beware that there are very few buses at weekends. You could, in theory, travel Coimbra, Alcobaca, Batalha and back to Coimbra in a single day with some careful planning. Leiria is a fairly large city near Alcobaca and Batalha and by using local buses to and from that place you can extend the time you have. There are also local buses between Alcobaca, Batalha and Leiria with Rodotejo and between Leiria and Coimbra there are the buses of Rede-Expressos, also four trains each day. I hope that tells you what you need to know.
