How do you get to Mont Saint Michel from Clermont Ferrand by public transport?
I don't think it is possible to do this as a daytrip by public transport or by hiring a car.
Keolis Emeraude run buses to MSM from Rennes, Paris and Dol de Bretagne:

Train to Rennes will take you 6+ hours, to Paris 3+ hours.

Driving time Clermont Ferrand>MSM is around 7 hours, according to www.viamichelin.com

Put in Clermont-Ferrand and as destination: 'Pontorson' and then choose 'Pontorson (à 10km du Mont-Saint-Michel) '

You could take a train from Clermont Ferrand to Paris, Gare de Lyon, it takes about three and a half hours, then as Leics has suggested take the keolis bus to Mont St Michel.

oh la la la Clermont-Ferrand, my inlaws native town, oh well.
you can barring any further information from you, the train is the easiest way as told above. you can look first at TER site, as it has more schedules once purchase option is done will revert to voyages-sncf which is the travel site of the SNCF,all connected here.

the trip can start in C-F to to gare Bercy in Paris, then gare montparnasse in Paris, then go to Rennes(direction st malo) ,and from there a bus No 42309 to mont saint michel about 8 hrs!
