Family in Chile

by VeronicaG Online Now Feb 28, 2010 at 8:55 AM

We are awaiting word from our son and his family....they live outside Santiago in Chicureo. Word has gotten out that they are ok, but haven't been able to talk with him directly. Anyone in the same situation? Waiting by the phone, Veronica

Does he have a Facebook account? Many people have located loved ones via that medium.

Good that you have heard that they are all right. Hopefully the phone lines and the internet will be back in operation before too long. Wishing you all the best.

NO, but his wife does...they dont'have electricity right now and apparently their cell phone batteries are dead. We keep hoping somehow they'll call us, though--we know that they are ok because a co-worker, a neighbor and our son's brother in law (on facebook chatline) all said they heard or talked with them yesterday following the quake. Some people can get news out and some cannot---we hope we can talk to them soon. We'll feel so much better...thanks for writing

Thanks, we've tried calling on their landline and cell phone also writing on the internet and using facebook chatline since yesterday morning and can't get them. However, a neighbor, a coworker and our son's brother in law have spoken to them after the quake either in person or earlier by phone. The phones cut off, though. It seems some people are able to get news out but others can't. We'll be glad to hear their voices...Veronica

Lynne, thank you. Yes, it's a tragedy to be sure! Would you believe a couple months ago my brother who is a missionary to Haiti went through the same ordeal?? We didn't hear whether he was dead or alive until three or so days later....this is just becoming too too familiar!! However, prayers have helped tremendously!!

I like that particular photo, too...there we are all smiling...who would have known what was to come. Anyway, we know they are ok and so we wait to hear from the directly. Water could become an issue, but the government is handling things wonderfully so far.

Parts of Chicureo are still without electricity, phone and water, for instance the Piedra Roja area. Other areas of Chicureo now have water and phone. Some condominiums have their own generators, so have had electricity but no phone. It really depends which bit you are in as it is a big comuna.

The Piedra Roja area is exactly where our son and his family live. Because of this they have decided to stay with a family member in Huechuraba until power on is back again. Thanks so much for your posting.

Hello, Una. Yes, on Monday morning we were able to speak with our son and then that evening with the rest of the family. I can't tell you how happy we were to do so! Our grandson (age 13) said that when the earthquake hit, he was upstairs watching late tv. His parents shouted for him to come down to the first floor and as he did so he described the steps as wobbling like something from an amusement park. Then shortly after, an exploding chemical plant added some drama to the scenario and black smoke filled the sky for part of the next day. It wasn't extinguished until a while later. So glad they are ok!!!! Thanks for asking. Veronica
