What are you interested in doing? You could take the METRA train out to my hometown of Naperville. Check out my Naperville page for hints and tips.

If you enjoy architecture, you might consider Oak Park which is home to the Frank Lloyd Wright studio, you can also do a walking tour to see some of his home designs. Don't forget about Chicago's neighborhoods, there is a lot more to the city than just the central tourist area. You can visit Chicago's Indian neighborhood on Devon Avenue, you can visit Bucktown/Wicker Park which has a lot of independent restaurants and shops, Old Town which is home to the Chicago History Museum and Second City, Lincoln Park where you'll find the Lincoln Park zoo, the Nature Museum and the Lincoln Park Conservatory. Hyde Park is where you'll find the University of Chicago Campus, Frank Lloyd Wright's Robie House, the Smart Museum, the Oriental Institute. Chinatown is really easy to get to, I like going on the weekends and having dim sum for lunch, you can poke around in some of the shops. Evanston is easy to get to from downtown, here's an idea of what there is to do in Evanston http://wikitravel.org/en/Evanston And here are some ideas for Oak Park http://wikitravel.org/en/Oak_Park

I visit Evanston at least once every trip to Chicago. It's a very peaceful city with a lot of good restaurants, shopping and a nice beach by the lake. It's also the location of a large college, where there's an art museum (blockmuseum.northwestern.edu...). I don't know that Evanston itself would offer you a lot to do. Maybe you could visit Evanston, then go another stop or two up to the Baha'i Temple in Wilmette. That's worth visiting, I think, particularly if you haven't been to a Baha'i Temple before. Oak Park is really nice as well though. In addition to the Frank Lloyd Wright house, there's the Ernest Hemingway birthplace and museum. Both these spots are walkable from the CTA station. Oak Park has a nice Downtown area with beautiful architecture and some shops and restaurants. I don't know that either of these would fill up a full day though. I would plan to leave in the morning and be back well before dinner.
