I've been to Cancun and Tulum but never got to Chetumal what would it be like for a retired Canadian x blue collar worker. Are there beaches like Tulum has ? Are they nearby ? Is there easy access to a reef ? what about hiking ? How much money per month would it cost to live there rather modestly ?
You could take a bus to Calderitas beach to swim, which is about 6 Km north of the city. I understand that it is rocky. There are other places north of there. Chetumal is a great city to visit, but I don't think I would want to live there. Why not visit it and see what it is like and how much things cost?

Hola... I live in Veracruz, but I went to Chetumal a two times. I think somewhere in my city or state Veracruz would be better choice of retire than Chetumal. Do a webb search and look, or write to me if you want more information.. Maria

I was in Chetumal 16 years ago. back then it was pretty dirty, sewer in the streets. did not see much in the way of beaches. Did stay at nearby Bacalar lake which was nice.

Well there are a lot of retired Canadians and Americans in the little village just north of Chetumal called Calderitas....We live here on our Social Security of just under1,000.00 U.S. a month. Own our own home, go fishing, hiking, camping, to free concerts here on the bay, movie theater, Sams Club, plenty of shopping. The markets here are very cheap on fresh fruit and vet. We go out to eat rather modestly. For someone at retirement age once you have your fm3 you can get a card that gets you a 50% discount on the bus. You can go to Cancun round trip for18.00. to Bacalar for1.80 round trip. The local buses only cost about 3 pesos (about 30 cents) and you can go to the Belize border from downtown for 8 pesos. (about 80 cents) Taxi's are 10 pesos. You can rent a Mexican style place between 50 and 100 dollars U.S. The beach here is beautiful. Yes in places it is rocky but not everywhere because as you know this is a bay. The reef is a boatride away to Xcalak. They go out to the reef from there. We sometimes have tent campers stay for the winter in our large back yard. They love it. My oponion you can live on very little we have a friend who only has around 500. a month income. So it depends on what you want to do. Hope this helps we just love it here.

My husbands on retirement, but we both have to work in the US. I have been through Chet on my way to and from Belize. It sounds like a great place to really retire. We can drive through Texas or we can fly to Cancun on Spirit Airlines. Please post an e-mail address or a website where we can buy or rent a house or buy land to build on. There are too many to know who to trust and since you have already done it you would know who to go to. We are sick and tired of working all the time when we should be enjoying life.
