Best of Chester, England

by zuriga Online Now Jul 4, 2009 at 1:20 PM

I'd like to know the best things for us to see during a short trip to Chester. Are there any must-see National Trust places, museums etc.? Also, if someone could recommend a terrific restaurant in the city itself for dinner, that would also be welcome.

Thanks!

Take boat ride on the Dee, boat stops at RED HOUSE pub. Very nice food and great views of the Dee.
Few good restaurants near the City Hall in the center of town.
You can to take afternoon tea at The Grosvenor Hotel & Spa.
Thake walking tour with the Roman solder(gude) around the old walled part of Chester, starts from the Tourist info center opsite the Roman amphiteatre.
Chek out the Grosvenor Museum, the Toy museum & Military Musem too.
All info on museums can be found on www.visitchester.com
Not faraway is Warecsam, but in the visinity is Chirk Castle, which belongs to the National Trust. They have magnificent gardens...

Thanks everyone - great ideas. It looks as if we will be very busy. The weather sounds a bit iffy and very cool, but this is England!

We'll be driving, so all the National Trust places are possible and we always enjoy using our membership. Tatton Hall looks very nice and there's a Tudor home (Moreton Hall?) also nearby.

We should have gone for a week!

Thanks,Barbara. We always have our NT cards and handbook with us. :-) There are so many places down here in Surrey and Sussex, so we often visit a lovely garden or home during the good weather. We are only minutes from Polesden Lacey, Clandon, Claremont and Hatchlands. I feel very lucky.

The Tudor homes have always interested me, even before I moved to the UK. I've always read a lot of historical novels sent in that time.. or just ordinary history books.

I see you are in Abergevenny. We almost made that our stop for another night. I want to eat at Stephen Terry's pub. Maybe next time!

Valentina: Don't worry about the spelling. English IS my first language, but I now live in England and it sometimes does me no good at all as I'm an American. :-) Thanks for the correction!

The best pub in Chester I think is Ye Old Boot. It's up on the rows on Eastgate Street. A good pub with lots of history.
