    • DIY/Hardware store in Cheboksary

      Cheboksary May 17, 2015 at 2:59 AM

Hi All. Can anyone point me in the right direction for a reliable hardware/DIY supplier in Cheboksary? I will be working at an event there in June however the goods we are shipping over from the UK are being sent on a carnet document meaning that we can't send consumables with the main transport. We will need things like screws, nails, adhesive tapes etc.

      Many Thanks in advance!

      Paul

      Saint Petersburg

Saint Petersburg May 5, 2015 at 6:54 AM

      Is this workable:

25 May Mon Day 03 : Moscow Vnukovo VKO - St. Petersburg Pulkovo LED (Taxi)–Aeroflot Rossiya SU6124 flight 09.30 – 11.00. St. Petersburg – Have driver & guide pick up directly from airport to Pushkin (1 Hr.) for Catherine Palace as per appointment time (closed on Tuesday & last Monday except for Summer, 670R, 30 min.). See the spacious airy ballroom, the “Grand Hall” or the “Hall of Lights”, with a spectacular painted ceiling, and comprises numerous distinctively decorated smaller rooms, including the reproduced Amber Room. Visiting the Imperial park, after the palace, and possibly the cute little town of Pushkin.

Drive along the ‘Great Perspective’ famous today as Nevsky Prospect, lined with marble palaces of Russian royalty and aristocracy. Visit St. Issac’s Cathedral - the main church of the Russian Empire. Later, visit to The Peter and Paul Fortress - the original citadel of St. Petersburg, Russia, founded by Peter the Great in 1703 and built to Domenico Trezzini’s designs from 1706-1740.

Evening at Leisure or view ‘opening of the bridges’ along Neva River cruise. OR C-189 Submarine Museum. Renaissance St. Petersburg Baltic Hotel. Pochtamtskaya Str 4 St. Petersburg - 190 000, RU. +78123804000

26 May Tue Day 04 : St. Petersburg – Visit the Hermitage Museum (closed on Monday, 600R o18), a museum of art and culture in St. Petersburg. It is the largest and oldest museums in the world with collections comprising of nearly three million items including the largest collection of paintings in the world.

Proceed to Peterhof (closed on Monday, 700R o18, 45 min). It is famous for its series of palaces and gardens known as the Peterhof Palace, laid out on the orders of the Russian Tsar, Peter the Great and sometimes called the ‘Russian Versailles’. Later, visit the Grand Palace entering by the ornate Ceremonial Staircase and see the Ballroom, Throne Room, the Western Chinese Study, the Drawing Room, the Imperial Suite, the Oak Study Room and the Crown Room. Visit Faberge museum.

From there, visit Church on Spilled Blood's interior, and maybe a canal cruise to see more of the city that is harder to see on foot. We could visit the Faberge Museum and palace, or visit Peter and Paul Fortress/Cathedral because they are open later.

Tonight, we discover traditional Russian dance and music during an elegant reception at the Russian Folklore show.

How do we fiat all this in??

We have to go to Pushkin directly from the airport, to be able to see. How long will that take? Can we aim for the 1 pm slot (Our flight reaches at 11 am)?

How and where do we hire minibus/van for 9 of us (including 1person 74 year old)?

We would need English speaking guide / Driver and van/bus on all days I think? How and where to book these at a decent rate?

      Thanks friends

      Ferry from Russia to Japan

      Vladivostok Yesterday

      Hi everybody,
Please, could you advise? I figured out that I need a valid ticket out of Russia, before I even apply for my visa. Is this correct?
If yes, then I'm thinking to go to Japan next, by ferry. The cheapest route is Vladivostok - Donghae - Sakaiminato (according to wikitravel.org/en/Vladivosto...), so I prefer it.

Does anybody know where I can purchase a ticket safely and the cheapest possible way, if I need it before my visa application? What if they don't issue my visa after all? I'm a British citizen.

      Many thanks, indeed!

Visit Kremlin fortress, which includes Tzar's Bell, Tzar's Cannon, Cathedral Square, Palace of Congresses and Armory Chamber of the Russian Tzar. Experience a small journey by metro train to see three marvelous railway stations of Moscow (including Revolution Square Metro). Arbat Street & the Izmailovo flea market for shopping.

Later in the evening, see the world famous Russian Circus (2 hrs).

Can most of this be done by foot from hotel? Or do we need a minibus/maxivan (sprinter etc.)? Or we take separate (local) taxis -- language issues? If needed, where do we hire?

      Taking great photos

      Moscow May 16, 2015 at 4:59 AM

I would like to ask those who have been to Moscow or those who have lived or who are currently living in Moscow (I am emphasizing these so I do not get a copy and paste answer from those who have not been to Moscow at all): Could you give me some hints where I could take great photos of Moscow´s landmarks? I will be there for only 3 nights and that is why I could really use some tips. Please do not give me tips like hire a professional photographer or some other tips that I could come up myself (sorry if I am being straightforward but I am really discouraging tips that will turn me off because I seldom ask for tips. thank you).

    • Magnitogorsk: A Quick Insight

      Magnitogorsk Aug 4, 2008 at 4:18 PM

I myself am from Magnitogorsk, been living here for almost 5 years now. With a 500k population, lots of smog from the industrial areas found on the left bank of the Ural river it's not really the place your regular tourist would want to visit. Nevertheless, Magnitogorsk has it's own beauties, hot spots, etc. and can be considered a typical rapidly developing city. Not as fast paced and hectic as Moscow, Magnitogorsk city life is pretty enjoyable, with quite a rich history for a young city (founded 1929), great entertainment, etc.

Well, that's a quick insight (call it biased if you will), but, if you need more information, I'd be more than glad to share by e-mail which is MastaG@mail.ru

      Regards,
      Gary.

      Hi
We're travelling in a mid-to-late Feb. We need to be close to the Metallurgical suburb (north) of Chelyabinsk. An apartment would be ok since we have 8 nights in Chelyabinsk. Can anyone help on how to find an apartment? Of course there are hotels but we need to stay close to this suburb. Also, how bad is the smog?

    • CHELYABINSK Hotels and Moscow Airports

      Chelyabinsk May 14, 2005 at 12:38 PM

      Hi:

My wife and I and one of our sons (adult) are travelling to Chelyabinsk, Russia for a wedding in August. We would appreciate any information on the area.

We are beginning the trip by flying to St Petersburg and thence a boat tour to Moscow.

We are especially interested in transportation (for three plus baggage) from the Chelyabinsk airport to hotels and back. Are there special services available or do you have to take a taxi? What are the rates?

Does anyone have any information on hotels in Chelyabinsk? We are looking at the Victoria and Maridain hotels.
Is English understood at the hotel? … We know French and a little German… but no Russian.

Is there anything special we should see or be aware of in Chelyabinsk.

We will be departing from Moscow (after the tour) to Chelyabinsk on a Saturday and returning Tuesday to Moscow (DME) then have to change to Moscow SVO airport to continue our flight to USA. In this case we will need to transfer five people plus baggage between the airports. Any suggestions

We have thought of attempting to pre-arrange for a van and driver to meet us at DME and take us to SVO. Are the companies reliable?

      Thank you, for your help
