road trip to Charlotte - best area for cheap hotels

A friend and I are planning a road trip for the middle of April. We are driving down from PA and will plan to stop at Richmond,VA Charlotte,NC and eventually get down to Atlanta,GA. Any tips for cheap hotels in Charlotte and any areas to avoid. Thank you.
