Charleston or Savannah

by RachelH Online Now Jan 17, 2004 at 1:20 PM

Will be in the area for only two days. Would ideally like to see both cities...which is the better one to spend more time in? Will be travelling with husband and 4 and 8 year olds. Thanks in advance!

I have been in Charleston with our son and daugher-in-law and their two children who are about those ages. We went to Patriot Point, to the Aquarium, and to Fort Sumter. The children enjoyed all of those things. Savannah also has forts, but Fort Sumter was nice because it involved a boat trip too.

Both cities have great atmosphere, but Charleston has more to do. I would spend more of your time in Charleston.

i live in charleston so maybe i am a little bias, but it has so many things to do. i would recommed a carriage ride through the battery, harbor tour (you can buy them together for a discount), or a ghost walk.

Of the two, I have only been to Charleston and can say that it was a very nice visit. In addition to the various sites, I found it to be very relaxing. There is a park area along the waterfront that is very enjoyable. There are the coolest bench-like swings that are enjoyable just to sit on and do nothing but relax. Also, the walk along the waterfront towards the battery is also enjoyable as there are many classical buildings.

hi there. i live in spartanburg, south carolina and have also lived in georgia, so i know both cities well. hands down, you should spend your time in charleston---much more beautiful city, more history, better for kids, just BETTER! also, there is a great island very nearby that you might want to visit---kiawah island. you will find the most pristine beaches anywhere. it's only about 30 miles from charleston. in fact, we often stay on kiawah and go into charleston for dinner. have fun! gatorgirl

Savannah and Charleston are both historic cities, but Charleston is much older, and larger. Charleston played a larger role in the revolutionary war as well as the civil war, and has a lot to offer. A good place to take young children in Charleston is to the beach... Charleston has three beaches to choose from that are nearby. (Isle of Palms has a lot of people, Sullivans Island and Folly Beach are less crowded.) Downtown Charleston has carriage rides that would be very interesting for the whole family. You can also visit the Yorktown. Another good place to visit is Charlestown Landing, which is a large and beautiful park (the original Charleston settlement), with a native animal zoo. Also, Charleston County has three waterparks to choose from if you'd like to take an afternoon off and let the kids play. Hope that helps.
