      Flamingo watching

      Cienfuegos Dec 7, 2014 at 5:12 AM

I'd love to observe some flamingos during my visit in Cuba in late December and early January.
Which places do you recommend? My guide book mentions Ciénaga de Zapata and Refugio de Fauna Silvestre Río Máximo, but are there others?

We plan to go from Santiago de Cuba wetsward until we reach Havana, so all places between these cities could be visited, so I'd appreciate any advise or hints.

Unfortunately we do not have plenty of time, so I'd be especially curious wether there are some spots, which would not make it necessary to sacrifie a whole day (as for Ciénaga de Zapata) and which are geographically near the main tourist sights.

Are shuttles/buses equipped for an infant car seat (21 months)? Do they provide infant car seats? If we bring a car seat, can we install it on the shuttle or bus?

Transfer from Varadero to Havanna needed

      Varadero Nov 26, 2014 at 11:36 AM

Are there any reliable sites, where I can book online a transfer from Varadero airport to Havanna in advance? I'll arrive too late to catch a public bus and I do not want to waste a night in Varadero...

I realize, that there are other possibilities like persuading official hotel busses or private transfer, but we want to go secure, so we tend to bite the bullett and pay the approximated USD 90,00 for an governmental taxi...

Gran Parque National Sierra Maestra and Commandancia general de la Plata

      Bayamo Dec 7, 2014 at 5:23 AM

We'll rent a car and our planned trip will go from Santiago de Cuba via Bayamo to Las Tunas. We'd curious to visit the landscape of Sierra Maestre. Do we get impressions by simply drive through? Or is it necessary to take a tour from Villa Islazul de Santo Domingo for instance to Commandancia General de la Plata? What a about a lmirador to spot Pico Turquino?

If simply driving through is not possible or not satisfactory enough, we deliberate to make a day tour to Gran Parque National Sierra Maestra. To climb up Pico Turquino is certainly too exhausting for us but a tour to Commandancia general de la Plata could be doable. How long does it take? Where and at which time we'd have to start? Or are there any other recommendable day tours?

      Mosquito net needed in Cuba?

Santiago de Cuba Nov 26, 2014 at 11:32 AM

Although Cuba is malaria-free there are some reports of Chikungunya and Dengue. So do you think a mosquito net is necessary for individual travel during christmas season?

I posted this question in the Santiago-forum, but I plan to visit the wohle island...

      Cayo Largo DIY Fishing Ban

by jfly Online Now Apr 5, 2009 at 5:05 AM

There is now a complete Do it Yourself fishing Ban on Cayo Largo.

There have been reports of harassment, equipment confiscation and fines for people caught fishing from shore.

The culprit is the Avalon Fishing Club who has bought exclusive fishing rights to the whole area.

You can fish with them for3000 to5000 for week

Don't go to Cayo Largo if you want to fish for fun

    • Stray Dogs?

by Mel3737 Online Now Jul 23, 2008 at 9:07 PM

I have been to other Caribbean destinations where there are stray dogs, being an animal lover this was hard for me to see and spent my whole vacation feeding them. Being as this is an island i was hoping there would be no stray dogs or at least a lot less. has anyone who has been there seen stray dogs around?
      thanks :)

      Getting there by boat

by lobstop Online Now Sep 17, 2007 at 2:33 AM

      Dear all,
is there another possibility to get to Cayo Largo except by plane from Havana or Varadero? We travel by car during the first week in Cuba and end up in Cienfuegos. We would like to drop the car there and get on a boat to Cayo Largo in order to avoid driving back to Havana and getting on a plane.
Any ideas? Even Lonely Planet speaks about planes only...
      Thanks and cheers!

My partner and I stayed at the Hotel Sol Pelicano a few years ago, and really want to return this November on our Honeymoon with our little boy who will be almost 2. I cannot find any Tour Operators that feature this Hotel in the UK. Has anyone got any details on how I can book or contact the Hotel direct. I really need to sort out asap.

      Thanks

how can I get to cayo largo? are there flights leaving from havana or trinidad? hoow much does it cost to get there? is it possible to find casa particular in this island or it's a place only for package tourists? I'm a backpacker. I've only found a few all inclusive hotels on the net, the rates are about 100 CUC a day, too expensive for me.

We need help. This is our first trip to Cayo Largo and are very excited about going. It sounds great. What should we know about it that will be helpful on our stay? Where is the best place to exchange our currency? It's our 30th Wedding Anniversary trip!!
