We are staying in Cavtat the first two weeks in October. Does anyone know how prices compare re renting a car and driver to see the countryside and an organised tour.We have found in some countries taxi drivers are pleased to get business in off peak seasons and one gets a better insight into a country. We enjoy scenery and smaller local places, any recommendations of best places to see. All help will be appreciated.
Hi You will find Cavtat a beautiful town , not far from Dubrovnik, less than an hour on the local bus, a most interesting trip which will give you an insight to the local people, it stops many times to pick up/ get off, the locals are real locals, different to what you see in Dubrovnik. The view from the bus as you approach Dubrovnik from high in the hills is excellent. Back to Cavtat, it is the destination for the rich and famous during high season, they like to park their yachts here.. There is also a small ferry service to and from Dubrovnik, we did not have time to use it as we made a day visit to Cavtat. I think it would be a great place to stay, plenty of fine walks to do , cafes etc. We were in Dubrovnik for 6 days 10th October'05, nice weather about 23C, but did not go swimming as we live in a hot country (Australia), there were some people swimming and enjoying it , it looked as though they were from cooler northern countries. I would recommend you take a day trip to the Islands, hire a car for a few days and drive up the coast , traffic is slow as coastal roads have bends which slow things down, you can be in Split under 3 hours. We had 4 days in Dubrovnik by ourselves then joined a 9 day tour of Croatia and Slovennia, most enjoyable.Have you paged through VT PAGES, I have photos of Cavtat etc. Good Luck, Mikebb

Cilipi and osojnik are beautiful small villages behind the hills. There are organised trips to that places. Cheapest rental car is about 50 Euro. Organised trip to cilipi is 60 Euro, but that includes transport (and gas), entrance and animation and also a drink. There are many locals who want to drive you to the places you wish. Busses in that area are also ok.
