Unfortunately the whole site is closed just during my next week's visit... I am very disappointed about this fact, because I realized the rock as one of the higlights of my trip toireland... Do you think, Cashel is still worth the detour just to take a look to the rock from distance? I'm planning to go from Kilkenny to Galway...
Hi Where did you read that it was closed? I've just been on the tourist website and it doesn't mention it. It says it's open Mid March to Mid June, daily 9.30am - 5.30pm cashel.ie/tourism.php?sect=R... Of Cashel

Ahhaa. Did a bit more delving and she's only visiting Cashel on the 20th May so I can't imagine it'd be closed the whole time she's in Ireland. dfa.ie/home/index.aspx?id=86... Still there's nothing official that says it's definitely closed that I can find (only on some other travel forums).

Sorry, to doubt you, it is 'official'; heritageireland.ie/en/South-... It's been years since I went so can't really remember if you can see much from outside. Hopefully someone else will remember!

I got the tip that I should go via Clonmacnoise instead... Do you think, that would be a good idea?

The rock is closed for 5 days leading up to the Queens visit for security reasons, in fact there is a strong security presence in the town already (any villains elsewhere in Tipp must be having a field day). No its not worth looking at the Rock from a distance just buy a postcard. Cahir Castle and Swiss Cottage would also be on the southern route round. But I think that the Clonmacnoise route would be the shortest My route from Kilkenny to Galway would be up to Birr for a quick look at the Demesne and then to Clonmacnoise getting the M6 from Ballinasloe or avoid the toll and take the old road through Loughrea.

Well it does look pretty spectacular from a distance so if you are into photography it might be worth a look. Personally from the suggestions made already I would choose Cahir Castle followed by the walk along the river Suir to the Swiss Cottage. Birr Castle and grounds are good too, especially if you are into astronomy or gardens.
