Does anyone who has recently visited, or is resident in Casablanca, know if the new tramway system around the Central Market has been completed ? I was there in April twice this year, on stopovers, and only the section along Boulevard Mohammed 5, between Rue Chaouia and United Nations Square had been finished, the road was a pedestrian area, but the section around the Central Market was traffic and pedestrian chaos. I had to give the market a miss, it was impossible to access in the gridlocked traffic and pedestrian congestion. Any update would be appreciated, I'm tentatively formulating plans for my next trip, and the market was always, on previous trips, an excellent photographic opportunity. Benny.
I think I found the answer to my own question, it appears the target date for completion and the trams starting to operate is 12/12/12.......... moroccotomorrow.org/casablan... I'll definitely be taking a ride on one, I used to love the old Glasgow double-decker tramcars when I was a boy....... Benny.

Casablanca Tramway first line was opened to the public in December 2012. You can find more details and pics at railway-technology.com/proje...

Thanks Emily,............Your photo is coming up fine, but the link is "bad data". I've noticed this problem on quite a few Moroccan websites, I suspect maintenance accounts are not being paid!
I actually 'Goggled' the question last year and the completion date was forecast for an ambitious 12/12.2012, but I'm glad to see it's operational now, because I'll be stopping over in Casa in a couple of weeks time, (inshallah) en route to Essaouira and return. Do you know if it's possible to buy a daily ticket in the carstop shelters/kiosks, I don't want to be standing at the carstop without the right money, looking like a "donkey" ha ha!
I found this link which is still working, and a map of the network.......

I love my Casa pub crawls in the old French quarter, here is an account from last year under my previous "life" identity, before I dumped Lonely Planet and arrived here under "refugee status"....

Unfortunately, the new French-built Casa trams don't have the same aesthetic appeal as the old Glasgow trams I used to travel to school, but I guess that's progress, and anything that relieves the nightmare traffic congestion is most welcome!
Benny.
