Casablanca to Meknes or Marrakesh by plane

by matjung Online Now May 5, 2012 at 12:38 PM

Hi, I am spending about one week in Casablanca for holidays. And I am thinking about makeing a daytrip to Meknes and Marrakesh. Now I am wondering if it is a good/bad idea to make a day return trip by plane to Meknes/Marakesh. My thinking is that flying by plane is faster, than travelling by train. But I dont want to loose hours for delayed flights, or queues at check in, luggage control, etc. Thanks for sharing your opinion

You can just as easily have delayed trains as delayed flights, but of course it's not just flight time you have to compare with that of a train journey, you also have to factor in the time required to get to an airport, check in for the flight, and go through security. Together with the fact that airports are outside city centres, for me, flight duration has to be 3-4 hrs less than that of a direct train or bus trip for me to prefer it. So by my calculations, if a direct train trip is less than 4 hrs, it would only be worth flying between the same 2 points if there was a significant price advantage, or better timing e.g. the only train was at 04:00 hrs - although in my experience, that's more of a problem with planes, not trains. By train from Casablanca Voyageurs it's 2h30 hrs to Meknes and 3h15 to Marrakesh - so factoring in check-in times etc, I wouldn't see any advantage in flying. But of course your priorities might be different!

It's a short flight from Casablanca. Less than an hour if the flight doesn't stop in Agadir. I was in Marrakesh about a week ago. Absolutely loved it. In all honesty I would skip Casablanca and go straight to Marrakesh. Not too much in Casablanca. The airport in Marrakesh is pretty efficient as was Casablanca so flying would be the way to go. Royal Air Maroc is the local carrier. Supratours does have daily buses and the train left daily as well. I did read a lot about the main train station in Casablanca being a ways from the airport. You might want to check on that, not exactly about the train though as I thought flying was my best option.

Fast freeways connecting between those places. You could rent a car, car with driver or hire grande taxi with driver and go. No more than a day is all youneed for Casa if you are wanting to see Morocco. You can do easy train trips to Rabat. Car is better forMeknes so you can go to Volubilis and Moulay Idriss. Train is also easy for marrakech and few on its own.. You can train up to Asilah and stay the night there or Tangier. Lots of options if you are just wanting to go to cities.
