Romantic stay at Carmel

by Mafufo Online Now May 7, 2010 at 1:34 PM

Am traveling with my girlfriend to San Francisco, but we are planning to stay for one night in Carmel, because I have been told its beatiful. I already rented a car, so I can drive from the SFO airport on thursday down to Carmel.

I've seen some nice hotels in Carmel by the Sea, but also on Pacific Grove, Monterey and even Peble Beach, and I don't know the difference between each of the places.

Where is the best place to stay on a Romantic get away?
What to do on the day?
What hotel, inn, or b&b would you recomend?

Each one has a different vibe

Monterey has a lot of different facets - the aquarium, Cannery Row, Fisherman's Wharf, historic adobe homes http://www.historicmonterey.org/
Pacific Grove is a former Methodist retreat and is known for Victorian homes. Pebble Beach is a rich golfing community with seven public and private 18-hole golf courses. It is a gated community. I would eliminate staying here.
Carmel is an art colony type place and has one of the original missions.

I can't recommend anything specific because I haven't been in some time. This is a site which says it has the top 10 romantic hotels of the area. gayot.com/hotels/bestof/10be...

The Monterey aquarium is always a nice visit. From there you can walk along the water south towards Pacific Grove to Lover's Point (across from the Borg Motel and Lattitudes). It's only maybe a 20 minute walk. There is a small park there where you can have an afternoon picnic either in the grass or on the beach. In the afternoon hang around Cannery Row then go for dinner on the water and watch the sunset.

Tell us how it goes! :)

You really should stay in Carmel for a romantic getaway. Here are a couple of places you may enjoy.

The Cypress Inn is owned by Doris Day, and is a favorite there, and very central.

Or you can go a bit out of the mainstreem and stay at Clint Eastwood's ranch....

Carmel is a B&B kind of place. The whole atmosphere is like that. Enjoy.

Here is my page on the area with plenty of websites.

Try to include a romantic dinner at The Old Fisherman's grotto, originated by the legendary Sabu (the original Mowgli in The Jungle Book, and now run by his son).

The most romantic, hands down, is Carmel-by-the-Sea. Take Ocean Ave into town off Hwy 1. The walk through town with all the quaint shops is a memory hard to forget. Continue down Ocean Ave to one block before the beach. Turn left and walk along the Scenic Road path on the edge of the cliffs that has benches to sit and enjoy the view of the wide strip of sand and ocean below. Many types of accommodations in town. The best part is all the wonderful and different restaurants to chose among. My favorite romantic restaurant is Casanova. With a name like that what else do you need to know. But, I would stay in Pacific Grove as it could be less touristy and the most romantic and beautiful at night is at the Seven Gables Inn with a view of Lovers Point. Lattitudes is a great romantic restaurant across the street from Lovers Point. The See my VT page on the Seven Gables Inn.

You will pay a premium if you stay in Carmel. I use to own a gift shop in that community for 5 years, right on the main Street, Ocean Avenue, in my opinion Carmel sucks, when I lived there in the 70's most of the locals hated the tourists and only put up with them because of the money they spent, better places in Monterey, and Pacific Grove, you might also look at Carmel Valley.

Phil, they don't want to stay, but just spend the night. The 70's were a few years back. Sorry things didn't work out for you. Most of the shop owners today enjoy having customers and that includes the locals as well as out of towners. With the economy as it stands, many are closing up shop due to lack of business. Tourist business? That's what tourists do, bring business to this magical town by the sea. What makes the town magical. The locals. Yes, it is nice to have a little privacy at your own home, but most tourists respect the non-tourist areas of Carmel. One square mile is the incorporated city area and the locals take pride in their village called Camel-by-the-Sea. The Carmel Chamber of Commerce wants tourists. If money is no object then stay at Inn at Spanish Bay or Pebble Beach Lodge. Several more reasonable priced places would be Monterey Plaza and/or Portola Hotel and Spa. Both are in great locations for walking and eating. Sardine Factory has been around for 60 years and is a great place to eat.
