Tips for Film Festival 2012

by micmik Online Now May 1, 2012 at 1:47 AM

Last minute decision, so no planning yet.. any tips for a tourist planning to go Cannes during the annual film festival? For example: - for star spotting, will the last day/closing day be better or no difference? - when will they publish the daily film screenings (for public)? - for non-english films, will there be English subtitles? - I hear that the free films for the public are shown at night 930pm. How do I get to Fayence after that? (I am crashing over at my auntie's place during that week) - any other interesting tips for star spotting or otherwise?? Thanks!!!!

well I from France ,and visit Cannes often on personal and business trips with luxury hotels on the blvd. But not into the film days, too crowded and prices go up. hopefully some movie amateur will come along who has been there during the period. cheers

Good luck because it's a real madness! 1) It doesn't really matter. I don't think there's a best place, because sometimes when you least expect it, you spot someone, but you should try staying in front of their hotels (it's easier getting a spot in front of the Martinez hotel) or spending the whole day at the front row barrier of the French TV show "Le Grand Journal Canal Plus" open air studio at the Martinez beach. I think the film festival's jury always stays at the Majestic hotel and most of them come to the festival on foot. 2) You'll find great tips about the film festival on this blog: bestofniceblog.com/tag/canne... 3) There is no public transportation to Fayence at night (I think the last bus leaves at 6h15 PM). I believe the nearest train station is Grasse and the last train departs at 9h53 PM from Cannes. If you don't know anyone who could pick you up or spend the night with in Cannes, I think it's better to try seeing a film at the Director's Fortnight or Critic's Week.

You are more likely to see familiar stars on the first night than the last night. Some will not stay for the entire festival but they will all be there to be photographed at the opening.
