Day trip to Uxmal?

by kabesa Online Now Jan 7, 2012 at 11:49 AM

Hello, We're going to Cancun and want to go to Uxmal. Is it possible to do it as a day trip by public transport (I'm rather not rent a car)? Ir is the only way to stay overnight in Merida? We're also going to Chichen Itza? How similar is it to Uxmal and is it really worth the trip to Uxmal after visiting Chichen Itza? Thanks!

Im sure a lot has changed since I was there but the basic geography will be the same. Chichen Itza is only just doable as a day trip from Cancun imo: its a huge huge site. I recall a bus from Merida to Chichen taking around two hours each way, and Chichn is aroundhalf way. Uxmal is the other side of Merida, and is a fir bus journey. I'd say that even with a car, Cancun-Uxmal & back would be a very long day indeed. On buses, forget it. As to the worth it bit, how into ruins are you? the sites are very different. The pyramids of Uxmal are very different from those at Chichen, much more steeply piched, like those at Tikal. It's a much smaller site & all those years ago was relatively deserted, so it was actually much more atmospheric. Merida is a nice little town, and you'll be in Mexico rather than Cancun. Spend two nights there!

Agree with previous poster. Too far to do as a day trip. Suggest you forget Uxmal and do Chichen Itza AND Coba in the same day. You would be MUCH better off renting a car and doing this since the Toll road from Cancun to ChichenItza is a FREEWAY. Coba is less than 30 minutes from Chichen Itza and you will be able to climb the pyramid there that tops out over the tree line. Uxmal IS an overnighter.

Must agree. Yes, Uxmal with it's Puuc style sure is different, but they are similar in that they are both "well dug out tourist traps". Not really a bad thing, but Coba is a little more intimate and just different. And you can still climb the large pyramid as far as I know. Add Tulum and you get to see 3 pretty different sites. One more option for a daytrip would be Ek Balam.

Uxmel a little to far for a day trip. Do Chichen Itza & Ek Balam ( 15 minutes away & you can also climb the pyramid there with less people ). Coba is real time about an hour from there. Coba back to Cancun is a good hour and a half. Coba "Ek Balam" - Cancún Travelogue by brkilbourne Chichen Itza "Chichen Itza" - Cancún Travelogue by brkilbourne
