Hey guys Ive been living in Canada for the past year, Im off to mexico in October im going to Cancun and isla mujeres, should I get USD or the PESO? whats the best plan to get more bang for my buck? if anyone can give me feed back on isla mujeres, that would be great thanks
When we went to Cancun, we used both US dollars and the Peso. US dollars are widely accepted. The day we went to Isla Mujeres, we took public transportation which is very easy to do. From the Hotel zone we took the R1 bus. Look for the bus that says "Pto Juarez". It takes you to Gran Puerto where you get the Ultramar Ferry to Isla Mujeres. Tickets at the time we went cost 70 Pesos or7.00 US return. Our day on Isla Mujeres was wonderful. Really enjoyed it there. Here is a link to my Isla Mujeres page if you are interested. If you use US currency you will definitely take a beating on the exchange. Currently (IE this week) the US Peso exchange is hovering just below 1:14 which is good for the gringos but not the Mexicans. If you pay in US, most merchants will barely give you 11 or 12 to one. Before I go to the Baja, I just call my bank and ensure my credit and debit cards are registered for use in Mexico and every week or so get 5000 pesos at the Bancomer ATM (Banamex works too).

Yes due to the moving exchange rates lately, changing directly into pesos is a better option. There does not seem to be an official exchange rate, so it can vary from 10 to 1 to 13.5 (roughly current now). I always believe the best plan if you can is to use your credit card, you will always get the best exchange rate possible, but depending on your card you may get hit by other fees. Best places to change dollars is in the supermarkets like Mega or Walmart, you just pay for your purchases and they give you change in pesos - no commission or exchange fee. Be aware they don't like100 notes, so bring plenty of smaller notes. Isla Mujeres is delightful, and an easy ferry ride from Cancun. It's also the place to swim with whalesharks although in October I think you'll miss them.

This is Mexico! Be prepared with Mexican Pesos or you won't be able to pay for things. Some places take USD, but at 15 to 25% less than the prevailing exchange rate. Here is a useful article on this subject artdecosuites.com/2012/05/ex...
