Where would one go in or near Cancun to get a real taste of Mexico? Away from the hotels, I presume. In particular, I would like to see some sort of Christmas celebration. I know they have the posadas where the children go from place to place dressed as Mary and Joseph. Is it possible to witness this tradition in Cancun? I'll be at an all-inclusive place, from the 18th through Christmas day. All-inclusive is not my typical style, but heck, I'm not going to turn it down as a gift from my parents! If you have other Cancun tips, feel free to send me a message through VT. Thanks in advance!!!
There is probably a nice fun Christmas celebration in Cancun somewhere, it's just finding where would be difficult. Locals seem to still assume that tourists aren't interested in their gatherings. Ask your hotel workers, ask many of them. Unfortunately, there is almost no advertising to tourists about either the Cancun Carnaval or the Day of the Dead ceremonies. Within your immediate area (a short drive/ferry), you can choose from Isla Mujeres, Playa Del Carmen, Tulum, or Valladolid, Cozumel, and a few others. I wouldn't reccommend looking for great traditional activities at most of those. I think Christmas mass at the church in the town of Valladolid would be incredible (it's not too far from Cancun). It might also be worth the trip to go to Merida, a less touristy city. Hope this helps (a little). Cheers, Ed.

The Mexican Traditional Posadas starts on December 17 to the 23. Usually in all the country works like this: - A neighbourhood posada - A posada with co-workers - A family posada - The catholic churches make posadas for their parishioner - Elementary school posadas for childrens and parents. As the Dead of Dead, It's a very traditional fiesta, to share with family, and dearest friends. Not a massive event. In Cancun there will be a contest for nativity scene in the Popular Art Museum but cant' remember the exact date. A good advice it's like the other VT say, ask the workers in your hotel, because you will only see Christmas trees, Nativity scenes, and some regular stuff at the Hotel Zone. Have a great trip!
