Hi all, I'm moving back to Canberra after nearly 8 years away. Work is offering to provide me a house in one of these locations: - Gungahlin - Jerrabomberra - Queanbeyan I was wondering if anyone can give me positives or negatives for these locations. I don't have children and I'll be working in the city. I'd like to be close to cafes, restaurants and shops but that may not be possible. I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks, Mia
G'day Mia By the sound of it, something like an inner city townhouse (Kingston/Manuka or Ainslie/Reid) would probably best suit your needs - but if that's not on offer... In the following, I'm assuming you will be travelling by car, if by bus the equation would change. Gungahlin is a new satellite area to the north of Canberra. You would find adequate local shopping, but the problem may be travel times as I gather the road system is a bit lacking (there is a controversial new expressway being built, but it's still far from completion). Jerrabombera is also newish, just to the south west of Queanbeyan. A pleasant area and probably my choice of the three options, with again local shops and good road access - a trip to Canberra city by car would be fairly fast, as would access to the 'social' areas around Manuka. Queanbeyan has been there a long time - some parts are very pleasant, some less so: shopping is good and there are restaurants, and road access to Canberra. Hope this is some help. George

Thanks George, I think I've decided on either Queanbeyan or Jerrabomberra. If anyone else has any ideas, I'd love to hear them. Thanks Mia

Hi Mia. George is spot on. Gungahlin will be good one day, but not yet. The choice bewteen "Jerra" as it's known and Qbn is like a choice between suburb and town. Jerra is all new with just basic suburban amenities (supermarket, playing fields, etc). Qbn has most services and even a hospital. You can get by without a car in Qbn, but not so well in Jerra. You might want to bear in mind that Gungahlin is in the ACT and the other two make you a NSW resident. There are differences with registering a car and stuff like that.

QBY would be the best place to live from those 3 locations. The ACT territory government has just delivered the worst budget in history. They will be closing down schools, and basic services. Queabeyan is in NSW, so you'll be safe if you move there. It's got a good country town feel about it, with cheaper rates compared to the ACT.
