A quiet place in the sun

by Spader Online Now Sep 19, 2006 at 2:31 PM

I will probably go to the Canary Islands for a last minute charter trip any day now and my question is: Where is the best places on the Canaries to find a quiet beach and a restfull hotell? I'm on my own and would like to sit under a parasoll with a good book and a drink, having a swim now and again. No busy beach for me, no big hotel, please! On what island and in which area can I find that? Thanks for any help! Spader

Don't go to Tenerife! The sand is like glass when the wind blows. I hope the other Canary Islands are more beautiful. This one was the only place I have travelled that I would not want to return to!

Well, do not base the whole appreciation of an island for one person's bad experience. I've been 3 times to Tenerife, and I hope to repeat. By the way, never experienced strong winds there, maybe I was just lucky. But I've to say as well that beaching was not my only aim. Staying in one of the awful "brit&german-only" resorts on the South of the island is not "being to Tenerife". Is just being to an awful touristy resort. Do a little research and you'll find Teberife is plenty of beutiful places and amazing landscapes. Especially in the North (but there the sun is not "guaranteed"). Maybe Fuerteventura and Lanzarote are better bets if you only want to stay at the beaches. Sorry I cannot help on accomodation. Each time I went to the Canaries I took a hotel included in a package deal (it's cheaper) but located in a city. I do prefer to hire a car and discover the remote areas, these are the most beautiful and unspoilt.

La Gomera and La Palma would fit the bill but you will have to google for accommodation other than the paradors (secretplaces.com/sp/1/hotels..., paradores-spain.com/spain/pp.... As has been said, Tenerife is highly varied but the quieter places are away from the beach - if you can afford it try Hotel San Roque in Garachico.
