For an upcoming family trip in Vietnam, we have one night in HCMC before connecting domestic flight. I'm thinking that there's not much point in heading into District 1 (we will have 4 nights in HCMC later in the trip). So, I'm wondering if it makes sense to just get a hotel near the airport? I've researched some online and it seems that many of the hotels have NOTHING to do nearby. I'm not looking for cultural stuff, but would at least want to be able to walk around outside to get something to eat.
We will have approximately 20 hours during this transit, arriving Friday night and departing Saturday at around 2pm. Traveling with a two year old.
Recommendations for hotels appreciated. Something around US$70 would be good.
I'm in the early stages of planning, so far places around district 1 seem doable on foot since touristy spots like Ben Tranh Market, Opera house, Notre Dame Basilica, Reunification Palace etc.. are all within 1km of each other.
However, places like the War Remnants Museum, History Museum and Saigon Zoo are all quite far apart. What's the best way of getting to each of these places? How much should I expect to pay hiring either a cab or xe om from point to point or for the day.
I will be traveling to HCM solo. So far I've read that 20-25usd will get you a decent place which is a good thing because it's within my budget range. Actually I've read that budget places range from 7-25usd in the backpacker area, but most of the threads I've looked into are from a few years ago and I don't know if things have changed since then.
My question is, are these places safe for keeping my belongings in all day? As a solo traveler I will probably either take my valuables with me or leave them in the room. I will have around 1500usd cash plus a few hundred more in other currency, passport, travel documents and stuff like my camera, phone etc. I won't be able to take all that stuff with me all the time so I may leave it in the rooms for extended periods while I'm out and about. Is that a good idea, are there other options, what hotels can you recommend for a first timer to HCM travelling solo?
Thanks in advance.
