Stop off Santa Rosa to LA

by leesville Online Now May 3, 2007 at 3:36 AM

We are 2 adults + 11 / 7 yr old kids travelling by car from Sta Rosa north of S Francisco to LA. considered heading straight to Cambria and basing ourselves there for 3 nights (2nd week july) to relax / do Hearst / beaches / chill before proceeding to LA. Is this a realistic journey and would be we better to break the hwy journey in two places rather than one? any advice or specific places appreciated. we will likely hit cambria 8 july 3 nights and were looking at the best western in cambria. grateful for any advice. leesville

You can only see Hearst Castle by tours and each tour is just about 2 hours. Depending on the tolerance of your kids 1 or 2 tours might be about the most they can handle so it is a half day at most. The Central Coast is very nice but you might want to think about spreading out your stays. With 3 nights you might be spending quite a bit of time at the hotel(but that may be what you are looking for).

One thing you might think about is changing to spend 2 nights in the Monterey area. Here you have the Aquarium, which is a day in itself. There is also 17 Mile Drive and a lot more to see in the area.

Then travel down PCH to Cambria for your 3rd night. If you leave early enough you can actually take the Hearst Castle Tours on that day. If not you can take them early next morning and then head to LA.

Also, instead of Monterey you can stop at places like Pismo Beach or Santa Barbara for a couple of nights.

Santa Rosa to Cambria is about one day's travel, but to do it in one day misses a lot of things worth seeing. ( Pt Lobos, Monterey Aquarium, Cannery row, Carmel, 17-mile drive, Muir woods, elephant seals at various spots. And this is not counting all the things to see in SF itself. )

I'd stop for at least one night in Monterey, and do only one or two nights in Cambria.

Many thanks for the advice. will have stayed in san fran for 2 nights prior to sta rosa. Any recommendations on places to stay around monterey or carmel that would be nice but don't break the bank would be appreciated.

You might try Asilomar which is actually a California State Park. It's a beautiful tranquil spot in Pacific Grove, near Monterey. They have a special package that includes tickets to the Aquarium. Check them out at visitasilomar.com/packages.a...
