I'm a white guy who will be visiting friends who live near the intersection of Exposition and Normandie for a few weeks. How worried about safety should I be? Would it be safe to walk 5-6 blocks to get to a Metro station, or to wait for a bus in that area?
How long would you recommend for a family with 3 kids to spend at these two parks? I understand that Legoland has a water park as well as Disneyland has an adventure activity park- are these both worthwhile? Any coupon deals worth checking out to minimise expenses? Our 2 girls will have to go as adults- yikes!
Me & my friend will be driving LA to San Fran then onto Vegas.
We will be stopping along way in places, staying some nights etc. My question is there anything i need to be cautious with when driving. I have driven on other side of the road before when i lived in Dubai but obviously is not the US and was back in 2008. (I am from Aus & on full license).
Just some tips & pointers would be great.
Thanks in advance. Hayley
My husband and I are traveling from South Lake Tahoe to Yosemite and staying in Groveland for 2 nights in August . My plan was to take 395 and stop in Bodie on the way and I also want to stop at Whoa Nellie Deli in Lee Vining to see the view of Mono Lake. I'm figuring about 4 1/2 hours and then another 1/2 hour to the East entrance . My first thought was to drive to Groveland and head to the valley floor early the next morning but I now realize that we are traveling through Yosemite to get to Groveland ! So I'm wondering if we should head straight to the valley floor ( I want to do the glacier point tour) and then maybe have dinner there ...maybe a twilight stroll from Ahwahnee... And then head to Groveland for the night and back to the valley the next morning ( My daughter says we should do the Vernal Falls hike) Or are there other areas we should explore if we drive through to Groveland and do the valley floor the next day? We have never been to Yosemite ! I am making these plans solely on what I have read online.. I appreciate any advice :)
We are planning to visit the California Science Center and also want to see the Endeavour. On the homepage it says:
"A $2 timed reservation is required on weekends, holidays, and the high attendance periods below. Please call (213) 744-2019 for group reservations.
Weekdays through June 9th from 10:00am to 12:45pm"
It seems that the last sentence specifies a "high attendance period". However, it only says that it includes weekdays *through* June 9th, but does not specify when this period starts (so theoretically it could start on June 10th the year before). We are planning to come on August 17th (Monday).
Do we need a reservation?
Hi. I am currently booked in for 1 night at Pismo Beach on a road trip along the california coast in September. Prior to this I am staying in Santa Monica, and after I am staying in Carmel. I have recently been told Pismo has gone 'downhill' and was wondering if this is the case and if so where would be better to stay? Or if that person is talking rubbish and still worth staying there?
Hi. I am visiting California for the first time in September. We land in LA, where we are spending 3 nights, then heading to Sand Diego for 3 nights, then driving up the coast to San Francisco, stopping at various locations.
My question is whether people would recommend for us to stop at Palm Springs on our way to San Diego, stay for 1 night instead of one of the Sand Diego nights; therefore the new plan would be 3 nights LA, 1 night palm springs, 2 nights san diego, before heading up the coast.
I would appreciate any opinions or comments.
Me and three friends of mine are going up to death valley in June only for the morning and that night (going to Vegas during the day) so we're bringing good equipment however we want to explore safe caves, so I was wondering if I can get the coordinates to as many as possible.
Hi I found a place at 335 N Virginia Ct 90802 and another at 5439 E Sorrento Dr 90803. Any advice?
Hi, I have visited San Francisco a number of times and love the Golden Gate Bridge. I would like an original print from a local or Californian photographer. I would like some suggestions if possible of photographers. I love the style of Ansel Adams, very natural & black and white. Can anyone recommend anyone? I am due to visit San Francisco in August and would like to pick it up then from a gallery or studio but can understand if I would be better buying online from here in the UK.
Any help would be most appreciated!
Would anyone be able to give some advice? Two 22 year old Irish students are heading for Lucky D's hostel on 8th Ave, San Diego on a Monday night. Our flight is scheduled to arrive in LAX (Terminal 2) at 19.15. We want to get to our hostel in the cheapest way possible, we have already told them we will most likely arrive late at night.
Our plan so far was to get a Fly Away shuttle bus from the airport to Union Station in LA.
If we arrive on time we could get the Amtrak train to Old Town San Diego, the last service leaves at 10.10pm. According to google maps it is about a 10 minute drive from the Old Town train station to our hostel, so we would get a cab. However, this is more expensive than a bus, it costs 74 dollars for 2 tickets, whereas the greyhound bus is under 30 dollars for two tickets! Ideally we would like to get the bus, but are having problems with the greyhound website - we can't figure out which stations in LA/ San Diego the LA to San Diego service serves! As in we're not sure which bus station to catch the bus at in LA, or where it will stop in San Diego.
If getting the bus, we would get a cab from Union Station to the Greyhound bus station in LA. I think the closest one is on East 7th street? And then get the greyhound express bus to San Diego at 11pm. It is hard to tell from the Greyhound website which bus station the service goes to, has anybody taken this route before? Ideally we want to end up at the bus station on 1313 National Ave, San Diego, as this is only a 15 min walk or 5 min cab ride from our hostel.
We have never travelled in America before so are very unfamiliar with the transport system. Any advice would be appreciated regarding which bus stations the Greyhound bus stops at in LA and in San Diego, and how easy/safe getting the bus is. Finally, anybody who has flown to LAX and gotten a Flyaway shuttle bus to Union station - how easy is it to find the Fly Away bus terminal? We are flying to Terminal 2!
Thank you :)
My husband & I are driving from San Francisco up into the wineries, then to Carmel, Santa Barbara, Long Beach & ending up in San Diego.
1) Can anyone answer me on what the weather will be like from 12th June - 27th June in these areas?
2) Do people dress smartly to eat in restaurants/hotels in the evenings? And what about the day time attire?
3) How's best to get to hotel in San Francisco from International Airport. Bus/Taxis?
Recommend a good steak/wine/nice dining spot in Red Bluff....downtown would be nice.
we are driving in the month of August with 2 kids.
Sat & Sun staying in San Francisco doing sighseeing

Which beach may I able to find seashells? Or are they prohibited to gather? I am thinking of going to Newport Beach. Does anyone know if there are seashells to find? How about Corona Del Mar?
Has anyone been to Disneyland in the last few weeks, or days that can tell me if they R2D2 popcorn bucket is still available to purchase at Tomorrowland? Or the R2D2 mug souvenir which you can buy if you order the parfait at Tomorrowland Terrace? I am going during Memorial Week and I don't want to be running around trying to find it and be disappointed only to find out it has been discontinued and no longer available. Please help out a R2D2 fan. Thanks much!
Is it good time to visit mammoth lake in may end?
We like to stroll about quite a bit, Just wondering how safe the area's and bars around the waterfront are?
First time flying into LAX. I will be flying into LAX at 8:35 am on Delta and then switching to Hawaiin Air. I have to options for a depart time with Hawaiin; 10:55 am & 1:10 pm. Is the 10:55 am enough time? I will be checking luggage. Thanks.
Hi threr, we are 2 x families with 27 ftRVs...4 days in non elec campsites, any tips on what to do with kids each day and travel distance to activities? Do we leave RVs and get shuttle bus? Bike hire
Just wondering what hikes were doable since it seems that it will be raining right before and possibly during my stay at Yosemite next weekend?? I have a large group and half of us have a half dome permit but I read it's not recommended to do half dome after it rains.
I live in Europe and will visit SF and LA this summer.
After reading a lot, I decided to do the followings:
- Academy of Sciences
- Exploratorium (thursday night if I can)
- Golden Gate Park
- Presedio Park
- Union Square
- China Town
- AT&T park (baseball game)
- Some nice places to eat breakfast, candy, etc.. found with Yelp or Foursquare.
- Lombard Street
- Nob Hill
- Cable cars
- A sightseeing tour or hop-on-hop-off bus (not sure of this line)
- Fisherman's wharf
- Pier 39
- Renting Bike from Fisherman's wharf and passing over Golden Gate Bridge and returning with a ferry ( I am not sure if I can (or have to) visit Presedio with the bike before the bridge. (And/or Golden Gate Park))
- Apple company store (Sunnyvale - caltrain)
- Coit Tower
I have planned 5 days for all of these but I started to think that 5 days are more than I need, to do these. Am I right? What do you recommend?
Dear VT members,
I plan to visit LA for a week after my SF trip. The final day of my SF trip, I plan to go to Apple's company store located in Cupertino. While going there shall I hire a car to stop for some (??) important places while travelling to Cupertino?
I am also curious about what you think about continuing to LA by car (with my luggages) from Cupertino, instead of getting back to my hotel in downtown SF to travel to SFO next day for flying to LAX?
What are the public transportation options for Solvang to LAX airport
I've just started a job right in the heart of San Diego - 4th and B street (BOA bldg) and hope some clever locals can give me a few ideas on healthy (not-too-pricey) lunch spots for a veggie. Also, cool hiding spots on the tops of buildings or in tucked away plazas to eat a lunch and escape. When I lived in San Francisco and worked downtown I had a whole slew of hiding spots, mostly public open spaces that few people knew about. Anything like that here? Rooftop lounges with a view, perhaps? Thanks!!!
how can you have a nude beach in a place that never reaches of 65 degrees even in the summer
are images available of sites 57 and 59?
Hi all. I'll be visiting the park next weekend, 5/15 - 5/17. I'll arrive at night (5/15). I'd like to shoot star trails with a noticeable foreground. I'll then wait for the sunrise of 5/16. During the day time, I'll visit the points of interests. I'd also like to take photos of sunset. On 5/17, I'll visit more points of interests and then head back to LA. I'd be appreciated if you could advise on the locations for 1. star trails; 2. sunrise; and 3. sunset. In addition, please let me know if you have any photography tips in the park. For instance, what time at which location would be possible to create a dramatic shot. Thanks in advance!
What important historical places can I visit in one afternoon in Sonora, California?
