My husband and I are planning to drive along 101 from Ft.Bragg to Coos Bay. We want to picnic along the way. We would welcome suggestions for good picnic spots.
How many days were you planning for this trip? There are quite a number of places through there.

From Ft.Bragg to Coos Bay will be one day. We will spend two nights in Coos Bay and then go to SanFrancisco. We think the drive from Ft.Bragg to Coos Bay should take about 7hrs so we will want to stop along the way to rest/refresh.

If by then you haven't spent any quality time in a "real" redwood forest I suggest Howland Hill Road in the Jedediah Smith State Park, on the way to Stout Grove on the outskirts of Crescent City, CA. Spectacular trees.

Eureka or Arcadia would probably provide a good stoping spot but you should spend some time in the two National Parks that you'll pass through (Humbolt and Redwood National)

Three of my favorite places to stop north of Fort Bragg toward the Oregon coast, all of which are on or near the ocean as opposed to in the redwoods, are; are; 1) Point Cabrillo Light House State Park- one of the prettiest lighthouses on the West Coast with some spectacular views from the headlands to the ocean. Can be windy here but the views are priceless. Admission is free. gocalifornia.about.com/gi/o.... 2) Luffenholtz Beach County Park in Trinidad- is also a lovely spot for a picnic. 3) Harris County Beach in Brookings, Oregon. Very pretty park with views of the island off the coast.

There's all sorts of stuff through there, but doing this in one long day means having to pick and choose what it is you want. 7 hours driving time might work out, but keep in mind 101 isn't a very fast road. If you get a chance, Cape Blanco State Park is a bit south of Coos Bay and is notable because it is the farthest point west in the USA you can get to without driving to Alaska or getting to Hawaii. Many of the state parks in Oregon require a day use fee, which is5.
