Need help planning route by public transport

by cavangal Online Now Jun 7, 2012 at 9:38 AM

Traveling to Monterey in few weeks for 3 nights. Need some help on getting bus or train from Monterey to Santa Barbara. Wondering if there is a multi-ride pass that is cheaper for senior citizen. I will stay in Santa Barbara 4 nights and return via San Francisco for my return flight so would include this leg of journey if there is a cheaper ticket available to include full journey. I would use local transport getting around Santa Barbara and will be walking around mostly as I enjoy hiking and visits to historic sites. I just looked on Greyhound site but they do not offer discounts for senior travel. In fact, GH tickets cost more than AMtrak, for bus from SB via Salinas to SLO on to SF. If there is a train route I can pick up would consider that also. Did not see any other bus companies covering coastal route. Appreciate any help getting my tickets as I prefer having tickets booked in advance. Many thanks.

Yes, book Monterey to Santa Barbara through Amtrak and you will be put on a bus from Monterey to Salinas, and then a train from Salinas to Santa Barbara. The bus is usually operated by Greyhound but you pay for it through Amtrak. Amtrak has a senior (62+) discount. Additionally, there is a public bus that runs between Monterey and Salinas regularly. http://www.mst.org/

If traveling between Monterey and Santa Barbara by public transit, the train is the far more enjoyable and possibly less costly option. As one other poster has indicated if leaving from Monterey, you will be taken by bus over to the train station in Salinas. A short approximately 30 minute ride. Be aware that the bus only links up with a few of the daily trips, not all. There are currently 5 trips a day from Salinas to Santa Barbara. The cost varies from42 to 64 and the trip length is just under 6 hours. I do not know of a series discount offered on this route. Here is a copy of the weekday schedule between the two points.
