Calling all VT sleuths - name of this place in Cairo?

by leigh767 Online Now Apr 2, 2012 at 9:32 AM

Hi all, I need a bit of help from those who are familiar with Cairo. I last visited in Oct 2010 and was recommended this mausoleum (link to photos below). It took a looong time to find as it was extremely remote, and even the locals didn't seem familiar with the name. I was actually the only visitor for the entire duration of my visit there. This was great as the custodians at the entrance had the time to take me around the mausoleum. If you ask nicely, they will unlock the staircase of the minaret (which they usually keep locked) and you'll be able to explore the amazing architecture from the upper floor/roof. It was a fascinating place - and I've been to more than my fair share of mosques/mausoleums throughout Egypt! The problem now: a friend is visiting Cairo and asked for recommendations. This is a top "hidden find" but I can't recall the name of the mausoleum. I have also Googled all relevant phrases I can think of, to no avail. So this is my request to all VTers who've been to Cairo (or have a copy of the city's Lonely Planet, as I think I first saw it there): Have a look at the two shots I took for this place (this was from the roof, after climbing the minaret) and please let me know if you have an inkling where this might be/name of this mausoleum? The architecture is quite distinctive so hope this provides some clue. Let's see if the collective powers of VT can solve this mystery! Many thanks in advance. Shot 1: i992.photobucket.com/albums/... Hi there, Well, unfortunately I cannot see much from the photo, the architecture is quiet close to Ibn Touloun mosque and surroundings though and there is a near by mausoleum (this is where I think this photo was taken) but I don't recall the name. The mausoleum near Ibn Touloun mosque was used by one of the ministers (wezeers) during the sultan Hassan reign ... So basically your friend should ask to go to Ibn Touloun mosque (visit it if interest, It's really nice and unique, the oldest intact functioning Islamic monument in Cairo) and then look to the right from the entrance of the Ibn Touloun mosque, the mosoleum's minaret overlooks the Ibn Touloun mosque, she could then go there on foot. Hope this helps, Cheers.

Thanks for your reply! Unfortunately, I'm fairly certain it's not Ibn Toulon. I've been there too and it's a much, much larger mosque than this mausoleum. I've also managed to unearth a more proper/complete shot of the mausoleum from photo archives and from the photo below, it should be quite clear that it's done in a very different style from Ibn Toulon: i992.photobucket.com/albums/... If anyone has any new hunches I'd gladly hear them! Thanks once again :)
