Is there a bus from Cairo to Israel and if not can anyone explain how I can get to Cairo without flying. I can afford to either fly to Israel or Cairo directly from the US but flights between these two places are expensive. Cheers in advance, Tim
Unfortunately there are no such buses at the present time. You can, however, go by land: there is a taxi service between Cairo and Sinai, and there you have to get to the Taba border crossing, cross the border on foot to Israel (Eilat), and then take a bus on the Israeli side of the border.

It's a few years back now (and things change rapidly), but from Eilat we got a tour to Cairo for 3 days. There were two companies, one in Israel, one in Egypt that worked together (they weren't allowed to operate as a single business in both countries). Basically, we paid in Eilat and the tour rep on that side got us through to the Egyptian border. She bribed/flirted with the guards to get us through quickly and we were met on the Egyptian side. Much the same happened 3 days later on our return. I can recommend the overland route. I wouldn't want to do it every day as there's only so much sand/rock/gravel/desert you want to see but as an occasional experience it's well worth it. The high point of course is the Suez Canal. You get to drive between Asia and Africa (we went through a road tunnel). You need a guide/driver though. There was a certain level of bribes needed to get you smoothly past the Egyptian checkpoints in the desert. I imagine doing it on your own could be very different experience.
