I am still a little confused about taxi etiquette. I see prices for example from Tahir Square to the pyramids are around EL 15. I assume this is the cost for the taxi regardless of how many people. For short hops around town if you flag a taxi with other people already aboard I assume you pay per person in your group. My question is how much per person or is it per distance? Thanks
hi : When you take taxi for 3 or 4 person togather don,t pay more than 5 L.E for short distance it,s normally 3-5 LE but for Tahir Square to the pyramids it,s from 7-10 LE as i think and you can ask any body in Cario so he can give you advise . and the taxi is normally take 2-4 person . i wish it be usefull best wishes

Everyone has good advice, but I would add that you should pay what you think (5 LE is a good amount for most trips). Get out of the cab, hand them the money through the window, and walk away. Ignore them if they try to argue. Cairo is busy, you'll be swallowed in a sea of people in no time. Pay a little extra for more people in the cab. I also found it helpful if i was going somewhere specific, to have the proprietor at the hotel write the destination (streets) in arabic on a piece of paper to hand to the cabbie. have fun! Cairo is awesome...
