Great Barrier Reef

by hsm Online Now May 10, 2012 at 4:36 AM

I am going to a conference in Brisbane in August. After the conference, I would love to see the Great Barrier Reef for about 3-4 days. What is the best possible way to do it? Thanks

I would fly Brisbane-Cairns. Hire a car and go to Port Douglas. Do a day trip from there. Don't know if you scuba. If so, there are plenty of companies to go with. If not, there are also lots of companies that do snorkelling. Great time of year to do it. We did a trip with Wavelength at the same time last year and it was fantastic. Small numbers, great dive sites. Also did a trip with Quicksilver. Much bigger group but bigger boat if sea sickness is a problem. Just make sure that whoever you go with you go to the outer reef. You could do more than one trip if the reef is your sole reason for going to the far North but there are plenty of other things to do. Mossman Gorge is a beautiful spot in the rainforest. The skyrail up to Kuranda has superb views. A day at the beach is very pleasant and you could also do a daytrip to Cape Tribulation.

Hi Harj - agree with what Helen has written. We went to the same area Sept last year. I didnt go out to the reef but my wife and daughter did and really enjoyed the experience with QuickSilver which departs from Port Douglas. Be aware that it is peak season in August and you should pre-book accom AND rental car if using. You could fly out of Australia from Cairns as they have an international airport. Might be worth checking before you book flights to/from Australia.

You could just do snorkelling - QuickSilver has its own "pen" in the ocean and all supervised with accredited life guards. Really is spectacular seeing the reef and myriad fish.

Quicksilver is also good if you don't want to get into the water. They have marine biologists onboard to explain what you can see, an underwater observatory, glass bottom boat and a semi-submersible. It's a full day trip and they have a good buffet lunch too.
