Hello Can anyone please tell me how to get from St Malo to Caen? I think there is a train from St Malo to Dol-de Bretagne then from there to Caen. But does anyone know if there is a more direct route, e.g. by bus?? Thanks.
"Direct route" and "French buses" are not phrases that go together. Regional bus services seem to operate within departments and are very localised. St Malo's in Brittany, Caen in Normandy and it seems the bus companies just don't cross department lines. You might have more luck finding your way around these websites than I have had - good luck! The local bus operator in Caen and the Calvados department is www.busverts.fr and yes their buses don't cross the border for the most part. The previous poster is correct in that buses in France are organised on departmental lines, radiating from main towns and very often do not cross the border into the next department. The operator in the department of Ille-et-Vilaine is http://www.illenoo-services.fr/ Just to make things worse, their is another department, Manche, in between Calvados and Ille-et-Vilaine, so that makes me conclude that a bus journey between St Malo and Caen is going to be difficult if not impossible. Manche bus map at mobi50.com/ftp/FR_plan/plan-... The buses are so infrequent that if any of the routes of the different departments did meet up the chance of a connection are minimal.
