Is it relatively easy to get from Malpensa airport to Cadenabbia by public transport (with a moderate amount of luggage)?
Well, there may be multiple paths, but the first one that jumps to mind is taking the LeNord train from Malpensa to Como (change at Saronno), then taking a bus up the west side of the lake to Cadenabbia. There's no rail service in Cadenabbia itself (or even close to it).
I suppose you could try taking a ferry from Como up to Cadenabbia; I don't know if there are any ferries that would make this without changes.
I haven't made this trip, let's see if others have...

from Como there's C10 Bus here the timetable asfautolinee.it/LinkClick.as...">asfautolinee.it/LinkClick.as...
an alternative is to take traina to Varenna and then boat
or the best is private transfer and more you are, less each of you would pay

Here's the ferry timetables/info if you fancy taking that option:

A private transfer will definitely be easiest, though also most expensive. Best to book in advance online rather than just get a taxi on arrival, imo.

Thanks, everyone. Our flight arrives in the evening, so I think a pre-booked taxi transfer looks like the way to go...

I'd agree with you on that. Shop around a bit (google 'malpensa airport transfers'), but I expect you'll find the prices are much the same.
