    • Private car rental (Harstadt)

      Norway Apr 19, 2014 at 10:08 AM

Dear all, I am planning a trip in northern Norway this summer. I have heard that there are locals, usually the owners of car repair garages, that rent out used cars for about half the price of the big agencies. I would be really interested to do that but I cannot find anything on the internet. If you have already experienced this type of rental or know people who rent their car in the surroundings of Harstadt, please let me know. Thank you for you help. Making my trip a little bit cheaper would not hurt :)

    • How to arrange a hike on a glacier from various ports? How to travel from Olden to Hellesytt

      Geiranger Apr 11, 2014 at 4:12 PM

We will be traveling to western Norway from May 17-May 25th.
Our ports are Skjolden,Flam,Olden,Alesund and Stavanger.

I have booked Ferry passage to Gudvangen from Flam to see the Naeroyfjord. we will return by bus and hopefully take the Flam rail to Mydal and back to Flam

I booked a cruise through the Stavanger Archipelago into the Lysefjord.

I am wondering if I should try to go to find our way to Hellesytt so we can cruise Geiranger. is this possible from Olden? we will only be in port from 8-5

We would also like the opportunity to have a guided tour on a glacier and or kayak on a glacial lake. Perhaps from our stop in Skjolden (Nigard/Jostedal glacier) or in Olden (Briksdal Glacier) The cruise ship offers on trips to only view the glacier.

This might limit my opportunity to travel to Geiranger. Perhaps next trip? So much to see and experience.

      Any suggestions.

      Thanks,

      Norway Apr 5, 2014 at 9:18 AM

We are spending a couple of weeks in Scandinavia but only have a very short time in Norway at the end. We really want to experience the western fjords which means a day/night trip on NIN from Oslo and back again. My question is this: we have a choice to go as far as Voss or Bergen but we're mainly interested in seeing the fjords and the towns don't matter. I realize Bergen is far more charming than Voss but our time is so limited that if we can see the same natural wonders in Voss would it make sense to skip Bergen?

Or should we go all the way to Bergen?

      Cost of taxi

      Norway Apr 9, 2014 at 5:53 PM

We are arriving by cruise ship in Skjolden at 4pm on May 19. We would like to take a taxi from the port to the Urnes stave church. The manager of the church said that it was about 30km from the port. My question is how expensive would it be to take a taxi to the church. I ask because I've heard that everything is very expensive in Norway (compared to North America's standard) and I don't want to commit to something that may be out of my price range.

If anyone has been to the church..is it a difficult ride?

Thank you very much for any information!!

Which city for a weekend away

      Norway Apr 5, 2014 at 9:02 AM

      Hi all,

I'm currently researching a weekend in Norway (from London) and am having trouble choosing a city and am actually a bit overwhelmed with the options available. Do you have any recommendations as to the best place to visit? I have never been to Norway and would like to see some fjords and wonder around cobblestone streets, people watch etc. I will be on my own.

I have found the "Norway in a Nutshell" tours which have confused me. They also seem full on which I don't mind but want to be as efficient as possible. Is it necessary to do this or can I base myself in Bergen or similar and skip the travel elements.

      Any advice is gratefully received.

      Thanks! Natalie

      Where To Stay

      Kongsberg Oct 22, 2011 at 10:50 PM

Various sites online list different options for booking a room around Kongsberg. The only real hits Ive made are on 4 hotels. But Norway tourist info and other Norway-related places speak of Guest Houses, Cottages, Apartments, and other options. Yet when I tried booking sites, they kept finding zero rooms available. Which makes me think maybe I'm just not using the right method of attack. I suppose traditional hotel bookings are a mere matter of online travel services. But how are the other options found?

      Way to Sansva, er

      Buskerud Oct 8, 2011 at 6:59 PM

My father was born in Sandsvaer (I should have looked up the spelling, but I hope I got it close enough for people familar with the fylke to recognize what I meant). His father had a farm there, and there's some confusion about what the farm was called. I thought since his name was Mork, the farm was too. Anyway, on my bucket list is to stand on the farm where my father lived as an infant. Maybe even get a picture of me with the current owners. I figure the way to go is fly to Oslo and then get whatever transportation goes from there to Buskerud. Perhaps get a reservation to stay a day or two. I guess my question is how best to do all this. Love to take my wife along, but she is dead set against crossing the ocean for anything that is short. She just has too much arranging to do when she leaves home for anywhere, so I guess I'd be on my own. If I could book a tour that let me make a side trip, that's another option because I think riding a tour ship into a fjord would be awesome (yeh, I'm in my 60's, but I can still be awestruck). My mother said she had ancestors who migrated from Sognefjord to America in the 19th century, so I wouldn't mind at all visiting that one.

      Hello everyone,

I´m planning to go to Geilo in Norway on Friday, leaving from Oslo Torp (with Raynair). Therefore I need to take a bus either from Drammen or from Oslo. Since Oslo might be a little tight (five minutes between ariival with torpexpressen and departure of the bus to Geilo) I was thinking to change busses in Drammen. Unfortunetly I have to wait in Drammen form 5.45p.m. to 7.15pm and since I´m a girl I´m kind of scared. Is there a restaurant somewhere close by or are my worries without reason?

      Drammen Oct 10, 2007 at 3:36 AM

      Hi everyone
My husband lives across in Tranby and when I go to visit him, I usually get on the Torp Expressen and get off at Drammen at the Shell Garage on Kjellstad. Going home, I get on at the Statoil Garage on Kjellstad.

However, I have noticed that the Torp Expressen bus stop has changed for this service.. Seems to be at a place called Bangelokka (sorry about the spelling - my keyboard cannot type the letter properly)

Can anyone tell me where this stop is, so that I can get my husband to pick me up at the right place.. He doesn't know where it is and when I do an internet search, it brings nothing up (probably because i'm not typing the work correctly).

      Many thanks

      Drammen Feb 26, 2007 at 6:24 AM

      Hi there

I have already posted a thread on the Oslo page to get information about accommodation in Drammen or nearby. My fellow V.T ers have been very helpful, so thank you.

Moving on from this, I wondered if anyone could give me any information about who to contact to rent a flat in Drammen/Asker/Lier, along with an indication of how much the rent would be on a 1 bedroom flat. My fiance is due to move across to start work in Tranby on 18th March and needs something as soon as possible, not too far from Tranby.

Maybe a 1 bedroom flat or a guest house initially, until he can find something to rent. This would likely be a long term let, for at least 1 year.

I do not know where to start looking and cannot find anything on the internet in English.

Can anyone out there help me?
