Hey! From Bujumbura local bus to Lake Tanganyika. Board boat to southern Tanzania the local bus to Tunduma border post. From Tunduma there is Inter Africa bus to Lusaka. From Lusaka Inter Cape bus to Johannesburg or cape town. In this way you should have flexible schedule. It can reach 500 USD appx. Cheers

I'd be tempted to do a trip on Lake Tanganyika it may well be boring going the whole length on the MV Liemba if and when it is running. It may well be the other end of the lake when you want to depart. You could always go as far as Kigoma then catch the train to Tabora bus to Mbeya hop on the TAZARA to Kapiri Mposhi, bus to Livingstone, train to Bulwayo bus to Beit Bridge the you'll be on South African trains. You could always go into Malawi and go down the lake there ahh decisions decisions!!! check out http://www.seat61.com/Zambia.htm and scandinaviagroup.com/Scandin... Not sure where you'll get info on Ferry services on the great lakes.

Alan, From Bujumburu I would take the boat down Lake Tanganyika to get onto Zambian soil. The Tazara Railway to Livingstone. Then use the Intercape bus via Namibia to Cape Town. You will have to rely on local transport (bus/taxi) for connections. As for budget, I have no idea of current rates, but I am sure Google will have some answers, once you decide on transport. Sound like it could be a nice trip, enjoy.
