Shopping costs

by Tipkal Online Now Apr 18, 2012 at 1:50 PM

I will be in Burma next Fall for @ two weeks. My transportation/hotels will be pre-paid as are some meals. I like to buy mementos when I travel and am most interested in textiles. Can anyone give me an idea of how much money (US dollars) I should bring? I know it's a difficult question but any input based on experience will be appreciated. Thank you.

Just in Burma last week. Prices on textiles varied. Silk and cotton at the silk weaving shops seemed expensive to me. Scarves started at around20 US and went up from there. Cotton blouses started around25 US. If you buy cotton clothing from the locals around the temples in Bagan, the prices were much better. 5000 to 8000 kyats ($5 to10 US). I am sure the quality isn't as good but they looked nice to me and you could bargain the prices down.

Living here I know that the prices have gone up much. But5 a day tip is rather much I'd say. Textiles can come in all kind of formats. It depends whether you want it as premade clothing, have your own made, use it for something altogether (I have a distant aunt who quilts and loved the material from here). There are bags, wall hangings, curtains and all that as well. Personally, I love the Chin stuff they sell at Bogyoke market (at least I think it is Chin). But I do find it expensive and bulky. since you'll come in half a year's time, can you give me some more specifics. If I do happen to go to the market, I can ask around. Then again, with inflation on the rise and the kyat in free float, prices can fluctuate a bit.
