Travel to Kengtung

by petert51 Online Now Dec 20, 2011 at 5:43 PM

Can anyone provide me with advice on travelling from Tachileik, across the river from Northern Thailand, to Kengtung. Is this feasible and return to Thailand on the same route. What are the visa, transport and accomodation issues. Also what is there to see, is it as amasing as the rest of Myanmar?

Hi, I was in the area few years ago when it was easy to leave passport on the border and get travel paper to travel to Keng Tung for 14 days. Now, this things are probably no longer the same and often you'll get confusing information about visit to that area/visa. Best and most sure is to ask at the border by yourself. The area is beautiful, worth extra try and expenses, there are guesthouses in town, some in the area near market, some by the lake, other scattered around at other locations. Market itself is worth an explore. Try to get to hot springs which is where locals like to go for picnic, take a decent guide to show you around or walk through fields to villages, get to Pintau waterfall. As a foreigner you'd likely to be approached first, if not, the guesthouses would always be able to find one. Go to Loi Mwe to former hill station, it's remote but you'll pass wonderful scenery. There are as well few interesting temples to see in KT itself, nice tea shops, very nice people, architecture that range from traditional Shan houses till modern Chinese buildings and everything in between. You shall have no problems getting along with locals and many would want to try to communicate. It was no issues 5 years ago and I don't think it would be issue now. Just go and see, I can only recommend a trip there, it's not like other Burma, but something of a mixture of local ethnic cultures (predominantly Shan/Dai), Thai, Chinese, Burmese, Kachin... I think you know what I mean if you've been to other Burmese provinces before with very heterogenous population (therefore a lot different than Bagan, Yangon, Mandalay thing... at least that's how I felt/noticed). Plus the area has always been in the heart of insurgent fractions, that's yet another mayor difference towards Burmese mainland.

The border with Thailand is only open for a day-trip FROM Thailand. If you want to visit this area, you'll have to fly into Myanmar (Yangon) first. Haven't been here yet but have heard it is beautiful.
