My fiance and I are getting married in Chiang Mai, Thailand on December 20th, 2010 and then we would like to venture into Burma. We have already secured our Burmese Visas but we have ready that we must fly into the country if we want to be able to travel around. What are our options for flights from Chiang Mai? I saw that Air Bagan only flies on Sundays and Thursdays and I have had trouble finding a schedule for Air Mandalay at all. What is the easiest way for us to get into Yangon? Also, I heard a rumor that we must have our first night hotel booked before we arrive or they will require us to purchase hotel vouchers that can only be used at government hotels. Is this true? I am aware that the airlines, unfortunately, are supported by the government, but once we get into the country we want to only support local hotels and transportation and avoid all government connections.
Most flights go from Chiang Mai to Bangkok to Yangon... There are many hotels that are mom and pop run in Yangon, but the formality from the government ask that you declear where you will be the first few days in Burma. Government wants to keep a track on your movements, but once there with a visa you can roam the cities. There are certain places they do not want you to go in the country side so be sure to ask others if it is okay before you roam into the country. Enjoy Burma Cheers Tommy x

If you want to fly direct from Chiang Mai, that's the only way. Otherwise fly via Bkk. The name of the hotel, it's just a formal paper work at the airport. Nobody care about that. Whatever you want, just write down. They do not know even the one you fill in is still exist or not. There are no more govt own hotels at all. Railway is the only transportation run by govt.

Your best bet is to fly to BKK and then onto Yangon. Try Air Asia and Bangkok Airways, and book NOW! It's the peak season and price will only get more expensive. You might want to look into the Bangkok Airways Discovery Pass, it may work out as a bargain for you. You have to do the math first. BA is a great airline. As said there are plenty of private hotels, generally15-20 can get you a clean bed, air cond, hot shower, tv, plus breakfast. This is the high-end of a budget hotel.

This biggestcurrent transport problem is with flights. One of the big domestic carriers, Yangon Airways, just had its licensed suspended and had to halt all their flights. You still have the choice of Bagan Air and Air Mandalay (and to a lesser extent Myanma Airways) but during this high season many of those flights will now be fully booked by tour groups. Could be time to discover those "exciting" bus and train trips! Actually, they can be quite interesting, just not very comfortable and they rarely arrive on time.
