In the midst of all the news about the recent unrest in Burma, and the controversy about tourists visiting the country (and I wholeheartedly advocate that tourists SHOULD visit Burma/Myanmar), one issue that gets lost in the media glare is the plight of the "average" Burmese citizen. With the recent petrol price increases, many people are having a much harder time in their daily lives. The UN's World Food Program has estimated that 5 million people in the country are in need of immediate food aid. I just heard about a new organization that is selling "red bands" to support the monks and people of Burma/Myanmar. You might check out their website (redbandforburma) and see if it's something you would want to support.
