day trips from Sofia during winter

is there any suggestions for day trips from Sofia during winter period? we wont have a car so it must be easy to do it by bus or train. what we're looking for is to visit a small town in the morning, walk around for 1-2 hours, probably see a monument if there is any around(old church, monastery, museum etc), have lunch and return back to Sofia.
