    • Bali for 2 weeks in September

      Bali May 19, 2013 at 5:45 PM

I am going to Bali for 2 weeks in September. I am a mature single female travelling along. I'd like to stay in 3 or 4 places while I'm there--I'd like to see some culture and religious temples, but would like to spend 4-5 days at the beach. I'm considering Amed (Eka Purnama cottages), maybe Sideman, Ubud, perhaps Sideman. I am a little concerned about getting around. Could someone let me know whether the places I've chosen work to show Balinese culture, with some beach? And can I get around between them pretty easily. Grateful for any answers--there are just so many possible places to go. Thanks!

    • Tips for a couple going to Indo on October!

      Bali 9 hours ago

Hi everyone! First of all thanks for reading my message!
My husband and me (31 and 29 years old) are going to Indonesia this October. The total length of our trip is 21 days. We know for sure that we want to spend one week in Mentawais (we will probably stay at the Aloita surf resort). Besides that we don't have any specific place that we want to go. I've heard so many incredible things about Indonesia that is hard to pick places to visit/stay. So I'd love to get some suggestions from people that have been there many times and especially from people who live there. I don't really like to go to touristic places and I sure prefer to meet local people, and go to places where locals hang out. I'd love to see some temples, go to a local yoga studio... And overall learn more about the Indonesian culture. My husband surfs but I don't. We both love the beach lifestyle (we are Brazilians living in California). So we would love to stay close to the beach! Also, some nightlife tips are always welcome! Thanks so much!!!

    • Long-Term Woodworking Course

      Ubud Yesterday

I am wondering if there is anywhere in Ubud, or anywhere else in Bali where these wood carvers take on apprentices. I am amazed at the beauty of the wood sculpture I see from Bali, and especially Ubud, and I am hoping that there is some way that I can train/study under a woodcarver, whether formally or informally, for at least a year. But any help with any specifics about any carving courses would be appreciated. But I am hoping to find a carver who will be kind enough to take me on as a pupil/apprentice.

Will be doing a sunrise tour of Borobodur that day and for the rest of the day it's either we do the Merapi 4WD tour or Caving in Jomblang. I've seen photos of Jomblang with the sunlight passing through and it's just amazing. However, Merapi by 4WD looks interesting also. Please help me decide which one to choose!

    • Getting around Java

      Java Jun 16, 2013 at 11:29 AM

      Hi everyone,

I am looking for some advice regarding how best for me and my girlfriend to get around Java in July. We land in Jakarta and will be travelling through Java and ending up in Bali (just started looking at the route but thinking of a lot of places, for example the first part of the route we'll go through Bogor, Cipanas, Bandung, Garut, Kampung Naga and Panagdaran and we know we want to visit Yogyakarta). We have about 9 days to get to Bali so will not have time to stay over in each of the places..

The question is what's the best way to travel? We want to maintain flexibility as our route/timings won't be exactly planned out. Options I'm thinking of are 1) hire a car with sat nav but is it safe in terms of road quality and car jacking type issues, 2) hire a car with sat nav and driver, but this is a long trip so is this possible, how would it work for the driver's accommodation etc. and can it be booked in advance, 3) use taxis as and when we need to travel but I guess this would be an expensive option and are taxis easy to get hold of across Java, or 4) any better ideas?

      Any advice much appreciated.

      Many thanks
      Adam

Where can I learn Bahasa Indonesia?

      Indonesia May 20, 2013 at 3:48 PM

Where would you recommend if I were to do some sort of crash course to learn the bahasa? I've been to Indonesia a couple times, in some instances to less frequented places where I had problems getting through with English only.

I know I'm not good at learning languages from books or on the computer, so can anyone recommend a school whatsoever where I could learn interacting with a small group or class. I can pay something for it if it's not too expensive.

      Trip to Bukittinggi in December

by saa73 Online Now Nov 6, 2006 at 5:33 AM

My wife and I will be visiting Bukittinggi next month (Dec 18-21) and would be grateful for advice on the following: i) Transport - is it at all possible/advisable to hire a self-drive car? ii) Taxi - Minangkabau airport to Bukittingi - what's the typical one-way cost? How long does it take from the airport to Bukittinggi? iii) Accommodation - the internet searches only comes up with Hotel Pusako or Novotel - this is OK for our budget. However, are there any unique/quaint guest houses that are clean and affordable? Perhaps something like an old colonial house, eg like in Camerons Highlands in Malaysia? Lastly - where can I sample the most awesome Minangkabau food in Bukittinggi/Padang. This is the main reason for coming over to the Minang highlands...and I must warn you, I am of Minangkabau descent and the best food is cooked by mother...so it has to be damn good!! (I love balado....where can I get the best??)

by AndyDem Online Now Oct 15, 2004 at 1:13 AM

We will be coming to Bukittinggi in January next year and will only have five days there (unfortunately!) Can anyone recommend an experienced local guide who can (1) take us on a tour of local sights and industries and (2) take us up Merapi? We don't speak very good Bahasa so some English would be helpful. And does anyone know if Merapi is safe to climb at the moment? Thanks for any suggestions/ advice.
