How much one pound is worth (or any currency, come to that) fluctuates from day to day. You can get an idea by using a conversion site such as oanda.com/currency/converter... which, today, gives a rate of 1GBP = 343 forints. But you won't get exactly that rate when you change money, because banks etc always add a charge. Take GBP with you (it's daft to take another currency...changing twice means you always lose out). Get some forints as well, to start you off, from either your bank or the Post Office or e.g. Thomas Cook. Don't change money at the airports: airport rates are always lower. There are plenty of exchange offices in Budapest, so you can exchange as and when necessary. Or you can do what most people do nowadays...use their card to withdraw cash from ATMs (cash machines) as required. If you plan to do this 9indeed, if you plan to use your card at all) make sure you contact your bank/card provider to tell them you will be out of the country. Although this does not guarantee your card will not be stopped in a random security check it does minimise the chances and certainly makes sorting things out much easier. Imo it's best to use ATMs when the bank is open, just in case your card gets 'swallowed'. If you intend to take a lot of cash then please use an under-clothing money pouch (you can get cheap ones from e.g. Boots or Asda). Don't keep a lot of money in a wallet, bag or your pocket. Budapest is no more dangerous than any large UK town, but it's always best to be cautious.

1GBP = 343.776HUF check xe.com, but you won't get this rate as this is the best buyers rate, you will get a little less.

Also find out if you can change unused Forint back again, when I was there it was not possible so in the last few days just use the cash you have on you. In other words, don,t buy more Forint than you will need.

You should be able to change forints back if you get them in the UK: check when you order them. Certainly my bank does that. But, of course, you may have to pay a fee.

I usually work on the basis that a 300 forint beer is a cheap one whilst a 700 forint beer is an expensive one - that's about the only currency exchange info I require - everything else is relative : - HIC!
