art nouveau interest

by rwalton Online Now Apr 28, 2012 at 12:54 AM

I'd like to stay in a hotel or B & B with goof access to Art Nouveau sight seeing in Brussels. I am uneasy about catching elevators(lifts) and would like a walk-up room. Suggestions?

Thanks for your reply. (And sorry about my goofy failure to proofread my question). Of course I've looked at quite a few hotels on line but it can be difficult to find out about certain facilities unless you contact them directly. I'll investigate the ones you've mentioned.

I am suggesting that you stop at the Hotel Stephanie Manos (www.manosstephanie.com). We had a room on the first first floor (remember, in Europe the first floor is the second floor in U.S. terms) that was easily accessible by the stairway. This hotel is located in the St-Gilles/Ixelles section of town. This is important for seeing the remaining Art Nouveau architecture of Brussels. Because St-Gilles/Ixelles was developed in the late 19th century, when Art Nouveau architecture was all the rage, the private homes and apartment houses built at this time were wholly or partially built in this style. The Mecca for those interested in Art Nouveau, the house/studio museum of Victor Horta (www.hortamuseum.be) and the Hôtel Hannon are not far from Hotel Stephanie. Other addresses to keep in mind are Rue Africaine, 92; Hôtel Ciamberlani; Hôtel Delhaye; Hôtel Solvay; Maison Hankar (please remember, in French a ‘hôtel’ is not a commercial establishment to spend the night, but a large, in-town, private home). Along Avenue Volders has many apartment houses in the Art Nouveau style. The Horta Museum and Hôtel Hannon are the only places that allow access; all others are only visible from the outside. There are also several fabulous Art Nouveau houses around Place Ambiorix, including the over-the-top Maison Saint-Cyr. This area of Brussels is outside the historic center, closer to the EU district, and must be reached by Métro.

The art nouveau sites are a bit all over Brussels, but there are several in the Ixelles neighborhood. One nice B&B is Les Chambres de Franz near Place Chatelain. The newly renovated Berger Hotel is also a unique place to stay near Porte de Namur. More info on both here - bestofbrusselsblog.com/2012/...
