    • Coolest place to stay

New York City Jul 13, 2015 at 9:28 AM

My daughter and I are going to New York in a few weeks. We go every summer to see as many Broadway shows as possible. Sometimes we stay in Time Square to be close to the theaters but I think one time staying there is more than enough. We have stayed right on Central Park but are looking for something different this time.

We would like a neighborhood that is fun and hip with cool shopping and good places to get coffee in the morning.
I was thinking of staying at the Standard High Line but would like recommendations of cool neighborhoods to stay in where we can walk to the shopping and restaurants.

      thanks, Robin

New York City Jul 12, 2015 at 7:03 AM

Hey Local Fellas, Please help me in this safety question. My friend is visiting NYC soon as a tourist, staying there for 1 month just for a vacation. This is her first time in NYC (and in USA as well), she is from Eastern Europe, and we are not sure how safe is Harlem and Bronx for her. I have read some great reviews for these areas that they are not that dangerous as it was, and some of you wrote that you are living there for years and feel safe. I know it is different if you are a local, but what about this case? What do you think? Any thoughts and suggestions appreciated. Gabriella

    • Do-able in One Day?

New York City 16 hours ago

We're coming to NY with our 10 and 6 year olds. I'm looking at getting the 1-day New York City Pass (to be used on a Friday) and so am figuring out a bunch of attractions that interest us, are near each other, and worthwhile on the pass for the day. This is what I'm thinking but is it realistic?

      • Top of the Rock & surrounding stores (Nintendo for DS, American Girl for DD)
      • Radio City Music Hall Tour
      • lunch in the area
      • Either Madison Square Gardens Tour - or - Water Taxi (for good views of Statue of Liberty and the city)
      • Madame Tussauds Was Museum
      • Discovery Times Square

Is this all doable or is it too much?  Much thanks.

      Security check - under age

New York City Jul 20, 2015 at 7:02 AM

Hello! I am going to New York with my two friends in August and we are quite scared about the security check. We are all under age and we're going to visit my friend (16 yrs old) and her mother. Her mother was borned in Czech Republic and she is also daughter of my dad's friend so they come to Czech Republic every year, and this is how we met. I am afraid that this will sound stupid because we aren't family. And what we should tell to the security check when they ask about the reason why we are visiting new york? Can we say that we are going there because of the tourism? I am just afraid that they will think that we are going there to work or something....

      Thank you for your advice

I want to bring cheese to the USA. It's ok, I've already read an article about bringing food to the USA, but I don't know what should I say in Custom Declaration. -Mark an X in the Yes or No box. Are you bringing with you:

A)Fruits, plants, food, or insects? B)Meats, animals, or animal/wildlife products?

Should I mark Yes to these answers?

Where to stay in Brooklyn and which airport is nearest?

by mickey.p Online Now Apr 27, 2013 at 12:34 PM

I am looking to spend 2- nights in NYC, we were there last year and did lots so are just doing a couple of nights between other areas.

We are looking to do Brooklyn bridge and Ellis Island as we missed these last year and we want to go to Newburgh for a day (OCC and to visit a friend!).

      Where can you recommend?

Last year we stayed at the Holiday Inn Manhattan View in Long Island City and it was perfect - great for everything.
This was suggested by someone on this forum so thought I'd ask for something similar in Brooklyn.
Need something not too expensive, walking distance to trains/subways etc.

My son is Autistic so he doesn't like crowds and the hotel last year was a great escape from the craziness of Manhattan!

Also which airport is closest to Brooklyn? We are flying to the west coast after NYC.

      Moving to Brooklyn

by HarukaT Online Now Dec 8, 2012 at 10:34 PM

Hello, I'm moving to Brooklyn next year, I am a 30 year old African American woman from California. Where are some safe, moderately affordable neighborhoods in Brooklyn to live? Since its just me I can live in a studio apartment, and I can pay up to about1200/month. Accessibility to good public transport is preferred, and safety is key since I want to live somewhere where I would feel safe if I have to return home late at night. Let me know where the best neighborhoods would be for affordability as well as safety.

Woman with *challenging* sense of direction asks for assistance! Toronto>>Brooklyn

by milan2003 Online Now Dec 1, 2011 at 8:42 AM

For some reason, I thought it would be a good idea to drive to Brooklyn. I'm not sure why this seemed reasonable at the time. I've driven to many places before, but do not know the many highways, tunnels, etc around NYC...and now that I see there are dozens of 'steps' in googlemap, know that I will get lost. And I do *not* want to get lost in the middle of a city-scape maze that I can't get out of.

      Oh...and I don't have a GPS.

I'm looking for the best route from Toronto to Brooklyn (Eastern Parkway). I know the shortest route seems to go through Chinatown, but I can't imagine what the traffic would be like. I *can* imagine me holding onto the wheel with the grip of death, getting lost, and leaving my car at the side of the road as I jump on the 4/5/6.

Would any of you have taken this route before?

Do you have suggestions for the best route taking into consideration directionally challenged people, as well as knowing the most logical routes (i.e. going through lower Manhattan is probably not a great idea).

      Your feedback is MOST welcome!

      Thank you
