    • Moving to Brasilia- nervous!!

by Bella6363 Online Now Jan 2, 2013 at 2:16 AM

Hello, I am an American in my late 20's. I just signed a contract to work in Brasilia for a number of years and am now thinking I could have made a wrong decision... I was wondering if anyone who lives in Brasilia can help me out with some information. 1. I will be living in the suburbs of Brasilia and will have no car and a very bad sense of direction!! It is important that I make friends and have an active social life. I am planning on learning as much Portoguese as I can. However, how do I make friends when there is not a lively downtown area? 2. As I am in my late 20's, I am also concerned with dating and forming a serious relationship with a Brasilian. Are relationships between Brasilians and expats common and would it be easy to find someone to date there? The city seems so closed. So far from what I have read on the internet, some things seem pretty dismal. I am looking to have some fun and an active life and was not aware of some things. Thanks so much for any input.

Hello, does anyone know if there are restrictions on photographing government buildings in Brasilia without permission? I ran into problems in Argentina taking photos of some official buildings and Mosque. It would be a horrible waste of time to get all the way to Brasilia to find out it is not possible to take photos of some of Oscar Niemeyer's architecture.

Half a day of tourism in Brasilia

by alamar Online Now Apr 17, 2010 at 5:24 PM

Hi, I will pass by Brasilia and I just have half a day free for some sightseeing, from midday to evening. I would appreciate suggestions on places to visit. They should be easily accesible by bus or taxi, open on a Monday, and also safe for a woman by herself. In order to orient your suggestions, I like architecture, street markets, music and ethnic food, but I am also open to other suggestions of spots if they are out of those categories. Thanks!

    • Tourism in Brasilia with kids (Am I mad ? )

by tiago.franco Online Now Aug 24, 2007 at 11:15 AM

I am Portuguese. I was thinking of taking advantage of the new direct flights between Lisbon and Brasilia, and spend 4-5 days there. My plans are to rent a car and stay in a hotel in the city centre. I intend to visit the major monuments, buildings, shopping malls, and the lake area. I will be travelling with my kids (3 and 8 years) and my wife. Everybody tells me I am mad, once noticed that I am foreign I will be robbed/kidnapped/etc... Is this true ? Or can I assume that if I take the normal precautions and stay in the city centre I will be safe ?

    • schools in brasilia

by deac Online Now Mar 29, 2007 at 8:50 PM

I am going to be moving to Brasilia with my two young children and am looking for information/advice on nursery/primary schools. My eldest will be starting kindergarten and I'm curious about what schools are available. I've seen the websites for the American School, Brasil International, and School of the Nations. Anyone have experience with any of those? Are there other international schools? Should we consider sending our child to a Brasilian school? I'd really like her to receive at least some instruction in Portugese, although I'd probably feel more comfortable with an English component as well. I would also prefer a school with a more secular than religious approach. Any advice on nursery schools for a two year would be great as well. Thanks for your thoughts!

    • Electricity transformer availability

by scottNYC Online Now Jan 21, 2006 at 10:03 PM

Hi, I am going to be moving to Brasilia with my wife and son from NYC. My wife is being transfered with her job. I am a filmmaker and photographer and I have lights that are 110/120 volts and not 220V. We also have some other small home appliances that are also 110/120 volts and not 220 volts. In America, I can buy transformers which will convert 220v to 110/120v. These are not the travel converters, but larger units which are meant for appliances and can be used for my film lights as well My question is does anyone know if these types of electric transformers are available in Brazil? Here is a link to show you an example. dvdoverseas.com/store/index.... Also, I would also like to communicate with anyone who is interested in a photographer or Cinematographer in the Brasilia region. I am interested in portrait, Nature/Environmental, and dramatic work. I will be studying Portuguese for the first 6 months or so in Brasilia until I can become more fluent. I am also interested in teaching English to earn some money as well. Thanks, Scott

Does anyone have suggestions for a very good architectural tour of Brasilia? I'm a journalist and will be there next week on a story (am interviewing some people about the homeless movement.) Will have some extra time and hoping to see the classics, but would also like to know if there are any good new examples of architecture (surely a city with such a heritage should have some new examples of exciting architecture.) Also: Is there an architecture critic on the local newspaper? Many thanks.
