Jurrasic Coast

by SillyWAbbit Online Now Aug 1, 2008 at 9:01 AM

Hi, I'll be in Bournemouth and would like to take a picturesque walk along the Jurassic coast. How far is it from Bournemouth and how easy is it to get to? I'll be using public transport. I'm not too fit so I'm not looking for a lot of extreem ups and downs. Any suggestions for walking ( where to start, stop, and so on ), please? Thanks in advance. - Martin

Hmm....the reently-named 'Jurassic coast' used to be just a lovely bit of coastline which had a lot of fossils! It's not easy to access much of it by public transport, so how about taking the bus to Swanage (number 40) on the Isle of Purbeck (which is not an island)? There are lots of lovely villages (the bus stops at Corfe Castle) and lots of potential for walks. wdbus.co.uk/htm/ttSouthern/i... for bus timetables. http://www.visitingpurbeck.co.uk/ for info about the area. However, the Jurassic coast site: http://www.jurassiccoast.com/ does have lots of information about walks, things to see/do etc. Even better, Bournemouth is on the route of the Jurassic Coast Bus Service: jurassiccoast.com/305/visiti... You should be able to find something so-able on the bus route, I think.

If you look at my Weymouth page in transportation there is a photo of the bus that runs along the Jurassic coast. It starts at Poole so you would have to get from Bournemouth to Poole but there are plenty of buses or the train.

Once in Swanage, best done from Bournemouth on an open top bus, provided that it isn't raining of course, you have several options. You could walk toward the pier then take the costal path to Durlston Country Park, this has a cafe, visitor center and some fantastic views, and of course a lighthouse. You can also get a taxi (£5 ish) or possibly a bus. You could travel to Langton Matravers, at the Scout Hut take the road to Dancing Ledge, it is about 1 mile to the coast, then Durlston is about 3 and a half miles from there. It take about 2 hours max to walk it at normal walking pace. None of this section is particularly difficult. Don't start from Durlston walking the other way because you may not arrive at Langton Matravers when there is a bus. Same goes for another option, take the bus for Worth Matravers from there you could walk to Winspit, or St Aldhems Head, there is a small old chapel there (interested?) It depends really on how far you wish to walk rather than how fit you are as in most cases these routes are walked by all fitnesses and ages. Or, you could just take the steam train to Corfe Castle and spend some time there. I've just posted travel page about the Isle of Purbeck, maybe you could look there too. Kevin
