RE: If you only had one day in Boston...

Hey guys! So, I'm headed back to Boston for my high school ten year reunion, and it's been about 9 years since I've been back to New England (scary!). Anyway, I've done a lot of the typical stuff (Freedom Trail, Fenway, Harvard Square), but I was wondering what new things I should check out that weren't there 5 years ago, or even a decade ago? I've been to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, but I heard the new wing is really cool! I also haven't ever been to the MFA, which I know is a crime, but unfortunately, I only have less than one day (I get in Thursday at 4pm, have a cocktail party, go sleepy, and then have until about 3 pm the next day to explore before I need to hit the road for New Hampshire). What things do you guys recommend? Some of my friends have suggested visiting the South End (apparently, it's totally different) and the ICA and Drink on the South Side.... any recommendations are welcome! Thanks! Blake

If you can appreciate tongue-in-cheek humor, and you want something off the beaten path, then you must visit the Museum of Bad Art (MOBA). One is in the southern outskirts of Dedham (in the basement of a community theater), and the other in Somerville (in the basement of a movie theater). The latter is close to the T. A splendid time is guaranteed for all.

Check out the area around the World Trade Center Boston. There are a number of restaurants, including Legal Test Kitchen ("LTK"), where Legal Seafoods tries out new recipes before introducing them in their main-line Legal Seafoods. A nice area to walk around as well.

The new wing of ISGM has been used for events/lectures. I recommend you to go to MFA if you have not been there. If you like to be outdoor, you will enjoy walking Boylston St.or Newbury St. at Back Bay toward Public Garden/Boston Common, the Esplanade along Charles river or around Tremont St at South End. Have a nice trip to Boston.

Walk from Downtown to the Harbor Area and see the new Rose Kennedy Greenway where the Central Artery used to be. Walk along the Harbor's edge on the Harborwalk behind Rowes Wharf onto Northern Avenue into what used to be the South Boston Industrial Area and you'll be amazed!

If you fancy seeing the new wing of the Gardner, it could be a quickie. The architecture is OK, and the new multi-story concert hall very interesting, but the feature for me is the ballroom without the stage, more like in Gardner's own day. With the time you have, you might easily combine a short visit to the Gardner with a short time in the new American wing of the nearby MFA, which has provided display space to items that you may not remember. Other than that, IMO, the biggest change in the city is the Rose Kennedy greenway and the open feel it has brought to the area. You could walk from there (Quincy Market) to the ICA to see the waterfront as well.

Always something going on around Fanuel Hall area. Shops and eateries...tours start here (the Duck?) usually street performers to entertain while you take a break. East Boston (little Italy) has the best foods, Espresso cafes, and interesting locals...seems like you are in a little town in Italy. The T is useful to get you back and forth to Harvard Square...international interest, good book stores and the like. Have fun. Boston has so much to offer.
