I would call your doctor - they are able to access info that will determine what you need. I did some looking around the net and see a mention of yellow fever vaccination being mandatory in some cases for Borneo. Things sometime change depending on outbreaks so call your doctor for most current requirements.

I agree with the above. I always see a doctor that knows travel medicine for advice, not us amateurs at VT. We were in the rainforest in Borneo for three days and were on an anti-malarials.

By all means listen to those above. See a travel medicine specialist. Here is what you need to know regarding Borneo/Malaysia. However, you still should see a specialist. Never take medical advise from non-medical personnel.

    Borneo... Where in Borneo?

Borneo is the 3rd largest island in the world of which there are actually three countries:

    1. The States of Sarawak and Sabah (Malaysia)
    2. The Province of Kalimantan (Indonesia)
    3. The State of Brunei (Brunei)

With a mass of this size, there are areas which are more developed than others so whether you need a malaria jab is, to an extend, very much dependent upon where you are going. The urban areas are usually safe.

However, as they say, prevention is better than cure and also the health regulations of your visiting and home country.

With three days, I doubt you can see the tip of the iceberg of what Borneo has to offer. You'll probably need a fortnight to see the various aspects the State of Sarawak alone. Traveling from the capital city of Sarawak, Kuching to the oil rich city of Miri by commercial airline takes one hour. And that's just urban Sarawak.

I do wish you a great and fun time in Borneo..

Just to clarify - there is no such thing as a malaria jab.

The regimen for prevention and treatment of malaria is tablets. For prevention these are taken starting before you go and a few days after you leave the malaria area - depending on the medication. It also depends on whether you are visiting a rural or urban area and the state of mosquito eradication that exists. You must see your travel doctor. Malaria is a serious disease and *must* be treated seriously.

If by monkeys, you mean the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre:

My short video: "Sepilok Oranguatan Rehabilition Centre - Borneo" - Borneo Video by GrumpyDiver

You reach it from Sandakan - Kota Kinubalu is a long way away by road, so I would suggest you fly to Sandakan. Some directions and information:
