the only way to go from/to thailand from/to borneo island is by air, however there is no direct flights to/from kota kinabalu, sabah and kucing, sarawak to bangkok, thailand. only direct is from bandar seri begawan, brunei to bangkok.

you can travel by road from kucing, sarawak all the way to kota kinabalu and sandakan and tawau in sabah, distance about 2,000kms, using public transport ie buses, going thru brunei. allow 2 weeks from kucing to tawau.

sepilok near sandakan is the best known orang utan sanctuary in sabah.

one possible itinerary is to fly-in to tawau in sabah from kuala lumpur ex bangkok via rail, and stop by semporna for diving, then on to lahad datu for danum valley and wildlife, follow by kinabatangan and sepilok for orang utan, then sandakan for turtles. cross mount kinabalu for kota kinabalu, and by road or better by boat to brunei via labuan, arrive serasa and move on to bandar seri begawan ( check-into youth centre at b$10pn ) for buses to seria and kuala belait, and across to miri in sarawak, stop for niah and mulu caves, then on to kucing about 900kms away. fly to johore baru in west malaysia, and on to bangkok. reverse itinerary also possible.

suggest you post under sabah and sarawak forum for more responses as borneo forum actually falls into brunei forum.

For flights, suggest you to check air asia a budget airline of Malaysia that covers other south asian countries and China too.

If you are very keen to see orangutans, then the best place is Sandakan. From Sandakan take a bus or a taxi to visit Sepilok about 40mnts drive.Transport to sepilok is not so good and better would be your own arrangement from Sandakan.
There are fixed timings to visit Orangutan sacturay because during these timings, the staff feed the Orangutans.Check the timings before you visit. The sanctuary is really a nice and a well organised place.
In Sandakan, prices are cheap and you can get a B&B accommodation (as they call it) easily.
You can take a bus from Sandakan to Kota Kinabalu easily too.
    Have a nice trip.

Hi, we were there in June last year and the weather was good. Probably the best to do, is check out my pages on Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, Sandakan etc. It does seem a cheap place, and I found the shopping very cheap. Great markets at KK.
